Artist Statement • Bikes changed my life, it is my pursuit to happiness, my one and only true joy. • I shoot BMX riding in natural and urban settings, showing the progression of the sport and also the creative outlook within the riders themselves. When I work with bike riders, I am reminded that we all need to live life to the fullest and enjoy every single day. Taking pictures of BMX riders is really fun actually, and can lead to some pretty interesting places to take pictures, which is always challenging having to be thrown into a new setup daily. I usually always shoot with some kind of flash, mostly for fill light but at night I use it as my main light. Flash is definitely my favorite tool in that it lets me set up a creative way to light up my subject. • I believe that it is much more difficult to achieve extraordinary results taking pictures of BMX than with other traditional forms of photography. I love shooting BMX, because it’s such an amazing feeling when I get that “one” shot, that one shot that comes out perfect, that one shot that is amazing beyond all belief, that’s what I love. I feel extremely accomplished when I get shots like that, and that is what makes me keep shooting day after day. • I begin a piece by finding a creative angle that works well with the surroundings, and the trick being pulled. I know a piece is done when I capture the full extent of the trick, and the rider is happy with the results. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and excitement knowing that I did what I was supposed to do. When people see my work, I'd like them to tell me how I can improve, so I can become an even better photographer.
Artist Biography My name is Casey Broughton and I am an avid photographer specializing in action photography. I went to El Camino High School for 4 years and took Photo for 2 years. My passion for action photography started when I first got my camera and I have been taking pictures of my friends riding bikes ever since. It is my favorite type of photography and combines my two passions: photography and bikes. I plan on furthering my education in photography at American River College majoring in Photo and Business. I have a mentor, Lewis Kemper, who is going to work with me this summer showing me how he combined his love of photography and made a name for himself and a good income.
