  4. What we do? • KCBB is AABB Accredited since 1989 • We comply with AABB donor regulations • Donor selection and donor care policies are derived from AABB regulations

  5. What we do? • Donor registration • Donor education • Donor selection: • DHQ • Medical checkup • Donor care

  6. Registration • AABB Standards require that the donor be linked to the donor records (photo ID) • Required information: • Name (first, last, MI) • Date and time of donation • Address • Telephone • Gender • Age (date of birth) – allogeneic donors must be at least 17 years of age

  7. Education • Donors must also be given education material about blood donation • Educational material include: • Before you donate • Your first donation • TTI (HIV,HBV,HCV) • Post donation instructions

  8. DHQ • Derived from AABB which is based on FDA regulations

  9. DHQ • Why ask questions? • Asking questions helps determine the overall suitability of the donor; from this, the donor will be: • Accepted • Temporarily deferred • Permanently deferred

  11. AABB DHQ • Two pages • 48 questions • We modified it: • Compressed and combined some question • Currently 1 page with 32 questions • Added questions • Available in 4 different languages

  12. Medical check up • General Appearance • Weight (47 Kg) • Temperature (less than 37.5) • Pulse (50 -100) • Blood Pressure: • Systolic ≤180 mm Hg • Diastolic ≤100 mm Hg • Hemoglobin (≥12.5 g/dL) • Skin Lesion

  14. Informed consent • Before donation, a donor must provide informed consent • If for any reason a donor doesn’t think their blood is safe to donate, there must be a mean for confidential unit exclusion • It is all kept confidential….

  15. Donor selection criteria • Periodically reviewed and updated by: • Head of donation unit • KCBB scientific and clinical committee • Quality Management department • During AABB inspection

  17. Malaria • A vector-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites (genus Plasmodium) • Occurs in numerous regions of the world Anopheles mosquito

  18. Malaria • 3 year deferral if the donor becomes asymptomatic after infection • 3 year deferral after the immigrant/citizen departs from the endemic area • 12-month deferral if a person travels to an endemic area and shows no symptoms on return

  19. Malaria • We test for Malaria • Test all coming from endemic areas • Test all with recent history of travel to Malarie endemic area • Currently working on developing a new policy

  20. future • Introduce barcoded sticker system for confedential unit exclusion • Malaria testing policy • vCJD deferral policy to be revisited • Abbreviated questionnaire for regular donors • Improve our internal audit and AABB regulation implementation system
