  1. Welcome to the First Day of School! Mathematical! Ms. Drybread 1328

  2. Opening Questions? • What are you looking forward to? • What are you NOT looking forward to?

  3. Meet Ms. Drybread • This is my fourth year of teaching • I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics with a minor in Asian Studies • I have taught Pre-Calculus, Advanced Topics, Algebra II, and Math for College Readiness. (This will be my first year teaching Middle School Math and Algebra I) • I love doing what I’m doing and will continue to learn, just as you will!

  4. School Rules • The school dress code will be enforced. Inappropriate dress will result in dismissal from the classroom. • Electronic devices are not to be used in the classroom, unless specified. • Ten or more unsatisfactory absences with result in a final grade of “No Credit.” This is an automatic consequence.

  5. Schedule • 7:20 – School AND Class starts • The first bell rings at 7:15 to let you know it’s time to start walking • I will be at my door ready to greet you. (Remember to smile ) • If you arrive to class after 7:20, you are LATE. You MUST get a late pass from the office. (First block only). Otherwise, you must have a pass from a teacher or administrator. • 8:50 – Prepare to go to your homeroom for Knights Time • You have 4 minutes to get to class • Knights Time will have the school announcements and lasts 10 minutes

  6. Schedule (Continued) • Monday and Wednesday are ALWAYS EVEN • Tuesday and Thursday areALWAYS ODD • Fridays switch between EVEN and ODD depending on the number of days in the quarter.

  7. Class Rules • The class rules will always be followed and displayed. 1. Be in your seat when the bell rings 2. Listen to instructions the first time they are given 3. Do not use vulgar or offensive language 4. Have all materials ready for class 5. Raise your hand and wait for permission • Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are not permitted in the classroom. • Bottled water is OK.

  8. Procedures – Walking In • Walk into the classroom quietly • Check your “Role of the Day” • Retrieve your Warm-Up Journal • Take your seat • Take out completed homework • Begin the Warm-Up assignment on your own • Continue working on it independently until further instruction is given

  9. Procedures – Walking In (KT) • Walk into the classroom quietly • Take your seat • Take out a book, magazine, comic book, newspaper, etc. (something to read – no tablets) • Remain in your seat until further instruction is given. • If papers need to be passed out, I will pick students randomly.

  10. Procedures – Hand Raising • Use the following hand signals to indicate your request – This helps me know what you need without disturbing the class

  11. Procedures – Quiet • When the noise level becomes too loud for learning, I will raise my hand and count down with five fingers. You should (1) have your eyes on me, (2) be quiet, (3) be still, (4) have your hands free, and (5) listen.

  12. Procedures – Bathroom Policy • When leaving the classroom, take the appropriate pass on the door (Bathroom, Office, or Library). • You only have THREE (3) opportunities to use the bathroom. (Use the restroom before class) • The door will ALWAYS be locked. Please knock and wait patiently. Only I can open the door.

  13. Procedures – After Finishing Work • I finished my work early, now what? • After permission you may do one of the following • Assist your fellow group members • Work on other unfinished assignments • Read a good book • Study for a class • Use a computer • Read ahead • Review the Embedded Assessment and Essential Questions

  14. Procedures – Moving Desks • Depending on the agenda of the day, the desks may need to be moved from columns to groups or groups to columns. We need to do this as quickly as possible so no time is wasted! • We will practice this until we get it right! • Please listen as I explain how you will move your desks.

  15. Procedures – Group Roles • The Materials/Timekeeper is responsible for retrieving the supply pouch or other activity materials BEFORE the bell rings. All materials must be returned to the pouch and placed on the table at the end of class. YOU are responsible for missing items. It is also your task to watch the time and let your group know if you are at a good pace. • Only the Advice Seeker can come up and ask the teacher a question. But first, ask 3 (people) before me! • The Presenter is responsible for sharing information during class discussion. Only they can explain their group’s work. • The Checker has to make sure everyone in the group is on task and understands the activity.

  16. Procedures – Leaving Class • Before going to your next class, make sure you are aware of the homework assignment and ask any questions you might have. • You will remain in your seat until I release you, NOT the bell. • Return the desks to their original position. • Enjoy the rest of your day! 

  17. Rewards and Penalties • Rewards • A smile • A high-five • Words of encouragement • Good grades • A nice note • A positive note/phone call/e-mail to your parents/guardians • Class rewards • A happy teacher • Penalties • If you choose to break a rule, the following will occur • 1st – Warning • 2nd – One X and 15 minutes after school • 3rd – Two X’s and 30 minutes after school • 4th – Three X’s and 45 minutes after school with a call home • 5th – Four X’s and 60 minutes after school with a referral and sent to the office • Severe disruption will result in being sent to administration • X’s may result in a lowering of your conduct grade

  18. Grading Policy • “It’s not how hard you work, it’s what you know” • Percentage scale 0-100% • Homework/Selected Classwork assignments - 2 grades • You can make at most 4 points (2 for completion and 2 for correctness) Example: fully completed (2), but no correct answers (0), so you receive 2 points, which is a C. (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) • Warm-Up Journal entries (2) – 1 grade • Average of two journal entries • Graded on completion • Embedded Assessments – 4 grades • A retake will be available within a week of the date it was given. You can make it up during lunch or after school. The new grade will be averaged with your first grade. • Unit Test – 6 grades • A practice version will be available before the test • Multiple-choice • No retakes

  19. Make-Up Policy • In the event of an absence, the student is responsible for obtaining and completing all make-up work. Obtain missed assignments from the website or classmates. Do not ask the teacher what you missed. YOU are responsible for finding out what you missed. • Missed assignments are due the day after you return. If you are absent more than one day, then the make-up work is due after the number of days absent. Example: Absent for 2 classes, due in 2 classes. • Unit Tests and EA’s must be made up in class the day you return, if it was announced when you were present.
