3. What is the objective of each tagging effort and are the right tags being used, or proposed to be used, to accomplish that objective • Primary (P), which indicates it is the current primary tag technology used in decision making, • Strong Secondary (SS), which indicates this current tag technology is a secondary source of information critical to current decision information or an emerging primary technology, • Weak Secondary (WS), which indicates this current tag technology is a secondary source of information not critical to current decision information • Specialized (SP) indicates that this tag technology currently has limited application, • Future (F) indicates that this technology is not currently being used to address the management question but that a future application is being explored, and • Not Applicable (NA)
PIT tags primary tag for 33% of questions Many predation questions are difficult to answer with current tag technology
CWT - primary tag for 100% of questions PIT – primary for 19%, and genetic for 4% Genetics – has largest potential future application
PIT - primary tag for hydro questions Acoustic & Radio for passage routes and route survival
PIT - primary tag for habitat questions All other tags play minor roles
CWT - primary tag (54%) for hatchery questions Genetics - 66% primary & strong secondary Adipose – 33% primary tag, others minor
Tag Management Summary • No single tag technology (same as ISRP) • PIT tags are most useful (48%), followed by CTW( 33%), • Acoustic and radio generally limited route and reach survival, and specialized applications • CWT mature technology, PIT tags maturing technology , & genetics newest most potential future applications
