SPORT FOR PERSONSWITH DISABILITIES CHAPTER 24
I. Why sports for persons with disabilities? • Sport as habilitation/rehabilitation/therapy • Sport as an opportunity to have and socialize through normalizing life experiences • Sport for sport sake (I am an athlete)
II. Sport Organizations • There are several national and international sport organizations for individuals with disabilities. A variety of sport opportunities are available through specific organizations; some may be restricted to a certain disability (Special Olympics) while others may be more general. Using the internet, search for the following sport organizations and the sports they sponsor:
Sport Organizations: (contd.) • Blazesports • wheelchair sports USA (WSUSA) • disabled Sports USA (DS/USA) • National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) • National Beep Baseball Association (NBBA)
Sport Organizations: (contd.) • Special Olympics • United States Association for Blind Athletes (USABA) • National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) • Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA)
III. Classification Systems • Classification systems are used to ensure that competition is equitable. Medical classification systems are designed to determine the degree which a medical condition that causes disability (spinal injury) can impact the individual’s ability to perform. Functional classifications systems focus not on the medically condition rather observe what functional abilities they have in their specific sport as noted in Table 24.2.
IV. Critical thinking and learning • Find out what adapted sports activities are available in your local area by contacting local school districts, recreational agencies or sports organizations. Select an activity to attend and write a brief synopsis of the event. Did the event meet your expectation and what did you learn from the event?
