    3. About the Course Aims To provide students with an introduction to Electricity & Magnetism (Electromagnetism) Objectives To introduce the principles of electricity and magnetism To understand and apply the laws governing electric and magnetic behaviour To be aware of some of the applications of electromagnetic behaviour

    4. Syllabus Electrostatics: Simple Electrostatic Phenomena; Coulomb's Law; Electric Field and Electric Field Lines; Conductors and Insulators; Gauss' Law; Electrostatic Potential; Equipotentials; Capacitors; Dielectrics. Steady Currents: Currents; Ohm's Law; Batteries; Electromotive Force (EMF) Magnetostatics: Magnets and Magnetic Fields; Magnetic Fields of Steady Currents; Ampere's Law; Solenoids; Biot-Savart Law; Force on Current in Magnetic Field; Motion of Charged Particles in E and B Fields. [Electromagnetic Induction: Self and Mutual Induction; Lenz's Law; Principles of Electric Motors; Electric Generators]

    5. Work & Assessment

    6. Teaching activities 2x9 lectures Last years notes available on WWW 9 weekly exercise class Exercise sheets to be collected Weekly workshop Lab

    7. Teaching and learning materials: Recommend Textbook “Physics for Scientists & Engineers (with Modern Physics)” Serway & Beichner, Pub. Saunders College CD ROM “Core Concepts in Physics” Pub. Saunders College Problem sheets Exercise sheets, model answers, lecture notes Available on WWW and in the Pevensy Filing Cabinet

    8. Work Student activities & Assessment Students are asked to hand in answers to selected problems each week Print out last years notes before lecture? To participate in classroom discussions Normal lecture attendance Re-read notes between lectures Read text book between lectures

    9. Feedback: Talk to me at end of lecture Email me Come and see me in Office hour Formal Student feedback will be sought through questionnaires towards the end of term

    10. Work & Assessment Assessment The assessment is based on a combination of continuous assessment and exams as follows: 20% weekly problem sheets 80% end-of-year exam (precise format to be decided)

    11. Lecturer’s Contact Details Seb Oliver Arundel 216 S.Oliver@Sussex.ac.uk http://astronomy.sussex.ac.uk/~sjo/ 01273-67 (8852) Office Hour: Thursday 11:30-12:30

    12. Home Work For next exercise class (Friday)… Write down as many different practical examples of static electricity in everyday life Write down as many different examples of magnetism in everyday life

    13. Work on black-board: Equations Used speed = distance / time as an example Explored nature of equation v = d/t Showed that this satisfied our expectations Units of equation d [m], t[s] and v[ms-1 or m/s] Used examples d = 100m, t = 10s etc. Showed how d = vt and t = d/v could be derived
