Understanding Elements and Atoms in Matter

Explore the basics of matter, elements, and atoms. Elements are pure substances with one type of atom. Atoms are the smallest particles with all the substance properties. Discover how electrons, protons, and neutrons form atoms, determining their properties.

  1. ELEMENTS & ATOMS

  2. What is Matter?

  3. Matter is made up of elements So what is an element

  4. An element • Is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom Then what is an ATOM

  5. An ATOM • Is the smallest particle of a substance that has all the properties of that substance

  6. For example Gold is made of atoms of gold.(Gold is one of our elements)

  7. All gold atoms are alike they are not like silver atoms or any other element

  8. ATOM • Are made up of • Electrons • Protons • And Neutrons

  9. ATOM

  10. Proton • Are positively ( +) charged particles in the nucleus of an atom. • (The number of protons tells what kind of atom it is. )

  11. Neutrons • Are also in the nucleus of an atom • They are not charged (Neutral) • They add mass to the atom • The number of neutrons does not change what kind of atom it is.

  12. Electrons • Are negatively charged particles (-). • Electrons are in spaces called clouds outside the nucleus • Electrons determine an atom’s chemical properties
