Dec0910 Science Center Hussain Almosa Karen Littlejohn Joey Nirschl Hassan Hassan Phase 3
Problem Statement The department has been decreasing in size and struggling to gather interest in these fields. To create an interest in this area, it is necessary to give people an opportunity to participate in hands-on demonstrations to show case the computer and electrical fields of engineering.
Client ISU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering • Vicky Thorland-Oster
Audience Any visitors to the Computer, Electrical, and Software Engineering departments. • Perspective Students • Alumni • Company Representatives • Outreach events
Environment • Will be in a room in Coover • Previous 2 phases have planned out where their modules are going in the room so far • Have to work around their modules and technology
Limitations • Short time in room while on Engineering tours • Knowledge of users may be limited • Be able to handle users with most disabilities
Deliverable • Must deliver a room with at least two modules by end of December
Concepts Piezoelectric Floor - To demonstrate that we can harness the mechanical energy from unconventional sources, such as people, in the form of electrical energy Sequential Programming - To demonstrate and create more understanding of the concept of programming
Piezoelectric Floor - Concept Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials (notably crystals and certain ceramics, including bone) to generate an electric potential in response to applied mechanical stress. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piezoelectricity )
Piezoelectric Floor - Current Applications In Japan they this technique to generate enough current to power ticket gates.
Piezoelectric Floor - Current Applications A dance club in London, called Club4Climate, implemented a Piezoelectric floor to capture energy from dancers to support their heating and cooling loads.
Concept Sketch LED Display Compressible Surface Piezoelectric element
System Description • Build a Piezoelectric Floor that visitors can walk on and see energy being generated. • Use displays to show a running total and the current amount being added.
Sequential Programming - Concept • Experience Programmers know that it is hard to teach computer programming skills in a short amount of time. • New and beginning programmers want to get an understanding without any required lectures or readings.
Sequential Programming - Purpose • Give users a hands-on programming experience by allowing them to order a randomized set of "instructions" • To maximize the hands-on focus of the station, the user will use a specialized blue tooth device such as a Wii Remote to drag-and-drop the components on a screen.
System Description A user/prospective student will have access to a Bluetooth enabled device such as a wii remote. This device will allow the user to manipulate the program. This program will allow a user to drag and drop randomized items onto a list. If they have an item out of order, they will be unable to continue until they get the correct item.
Schedule End of this semester: • Details on Design Plans • Ordered all parts Middle of Fall Semester: • Projects parts completed • Continue testing and building room End of December: • Room set up and being shown to visitors • Both modules in place
Major Risks • Cost of Piezoelectric Floor • Getting a room assigned in Coover
Conclusion The Science Center will be a great way to show off some of the cool things that people are working on in the fields of EE and CprE. Will hopefully: • Increase enrollment in the department • Be an interactive area for visitors to explore • Cause awareness of new and emerging technology in the field.
