  6. If you can imagine it in biology it already exists. Cells are specialized and their form depends on their function. What can cells do? What are the characteristics of life? Because cells are so specialized, it is difficult to draw a typical animal cell.

Cell Timeline • Robert Hooke 1665– observed cork under microscope • Anton van Leeuwehoek 1675– first person to see living cells • MattiasSchleiden 1838– all plants were made up of cells • Theodor Schwann 1839– all animals were made up of cells • Rudolph Virchow 1855– cells only came from cells

  11. No typical cell but… All eukaryotes (have a true nucleus) have 3 main components. • Cell membrane • Cytoplasm • DNA in the nucleus

  12. Cell membrane • Outer boundary of the cell • Separates cell from its surroundings and other cells • Composed of phospholipids It’s HW time!

  13. Cell membrane • Also called plasma membrane • Gives shape and flexibility to the cell • Is selectively permeable: it lets some molecules in and keeps others out (semi-permeable) • 7.5 to 10 nanometers thick • Composed of 2 layers of molecules– lipid bilayer

Lipid Bilayer • 2 layers of molecules • Each layer is a sheet of lipids • Carboxyl (COOH) group head is on the outer surface of the sheet while the HC tail is on the inner surface • Proteins embedded in the sheets • Because each lipid molecule can move freely, it is called the fluid mosaic model
