Background • Speakers Bureau • University program designed to educate students and the community about homophobia and heterosexism. • This piece is a narrative written by Goncalve, who wrote of his encounters with under-graduate students that were a part of the Speakers Bureau.
Gender Roles and Sexuality “Just as I did this, the students in this book and those in our classrooms discover as children how to perform the “right gender”, to be “good” girls and boys for the all importance audience of our families and later our peers in order to get our needs for safety and belonging at least minimally met.” (23)
EthosSpecific Identity Performance • Importance of Ethos • According to Goncalve ethos is a bridge between the personal and the public.
Personal Identity Identity is not fixed, instead it should be thought of as in-process and complicated. Personal Identity is forever changing depending on the target audience. Individuals construct their personas to attract a variety of audiences.
The Importance of Altering Your Personal Identity • Create allies • Makes it easier for your audience to relate to your message. • Adds credibility to your stance (ethos)
A Writer’s Personal Identities • Not only is altering your identifies important when speaking, but also is vital when your are composing an argument on paper. • “I suggest we create opportunities in our classrooms for students to examine the beliefs they hold, the beliefs that through language maintain, reproduce, resist, or transform social inequities based on identity” (pg 3).
