Bergenfield Music Department Honors and Distinctions • Recognized as one of the “Top 100 Communities in the United States for Music Education” in both 2003 and 2004, by the American Music Conference. • Named a “Grammy Signature Schools” finalist in both 2004 and 2005 the the National Association for the Recording Arts and Sciences’ Grammy Foundation.
Bergenfield Music Department Honors and Distinctions • Artist-in-Residence partnership with the New Jersey Choral Society and the Garden State Philharmonic. • BHS Director of Orchestras, John C. Kupp, named as the 2005 New Jersey Master Music Teacher by NJMEA. • Honors Wind Ensemble received a Gold rating and Honor Band status at the 2007 NJSMA Concert Band FestivalandNJ State Band Gala Concert.

Instrumental Course Offerings-Band Program • BHS Marching Band • All students in grades 9-12AND • Honors Wind Ensemble • Grades 9-12, by audition OR • Symphonic Band • Grades 10-12 OR • Concert Band • Grade 9
Bergenfield High School Marching Band • Top-rated band with a tradition of excellence • More performances in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade than any other high school band in the world • Performances at every NJ Honor Band Festival and North Jersey Band Festival • Performances at Disney World and on national television
Bergenfield High School Marching Band • Performs at band festivals, parades, and football games • Rehearses during regular class period • Mandatory after-school rehearsals on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings • Mandatory summer “Band Camp” during the week prior to the first day of school • All music students may audition for BHS Color Guard
Instrumental Course Offerings-Orchestra • String Orchestra • String students in grade 9-10 • Symphony Orchestra • String students in grades 11-12 Both orchestras include select woodwind, brass and percussion students from band classes
Instrumental Music-Music Lab Program • Allows for individualized and small-group instrumental instruction • Provides opportunities for chamber group playing • Supplements large ensemble component of instrumental music program • Lab schedule is designed for minimal impact to student’s class schedule
Vocal Course Offerings • Chorale • Open to students in grades 9-12. • Prerequisite for Concert Choir • Concert Choir • Open to students who have completed Chorale or the instrumental choral experience. • Open to students in grades 10-12.

BHS Music Honors Program • Membership invitation is by audition in the spring of the previous school year. • Grants honors (weighted) credit for students selected to participate in advanced ensembles. • Challenges most talented musicians with the study of advanced repertoire. • Provides enrichment opportunities beyond the traditional music curriculum.
Classroom Music Course Offerings • Music 1, 2 Honors and 3 AP • Music History and Theory course • Open to students in grades 9-12 • Up to a three year program of study • Music 3 is an AP Level course • Music for Enjoyment • Music appreciation survey course • Beginning Piano and Beginning Guitar • Each course provides basic instruction in instrumental technique and musicianship
Classroom Music Course Offerings • Electronic Music • Hands-on experiences in music composition and recording • Interdisciplinary multimedia projects • Practical audio engineering and live sound reinforcement opportunities • Open to grades 9-12 • Fulfills district’s computer course graduation requirement
