OEM Licensing • Pros • Cheapest way to get product • Comes pre-installed on hardware • Cons • Least flexible • Cannot be transferred in event of system failure
Retail Licensing • Pros • Less expensive then volume licensing • Can be transferred from machine to machine • Only one copy installed at a time • Can be purchased quickly through retail outlets • Can be purchased one license at a time • Cons • Must keep track of paper license keys
Volume Licensing • Pros • Most flexible licensing available • Single product key to keep track of for auditing • Able to download software from Microsoft • Eligible for free version upgrades (with software assurance) • Cons • Must be purchased from authorized reseller • Must have a valid volume license agreement • Must purchase 5 of some product to start new agreement
vSphere Pricing • With vSphere5 Licensing model is changing • Based not on physical but virtual memory • 3 price tiers • Standard -- $995 • up to 24GB ram per VM • Enterprise -- $2875 • up to 32GB ram per VM • Enterprise Plus -- $3495 • up to 48GB ram per VM
Hyper-V Pricing • Hyper-V is a free feature of Server 2008 • Windows Server Standard Edition • Costs $726 and allows for one free virtual • Windows Server Enterprise Edition • Costs $2358 and allows for four free virtuals • Windows Server Data Center Edition • Costs $2405 per socket and allows for unlimited virtuals
