  4. San Diego Geography • San Diego Bay is major body of water • Coastline is lined with beaches • San Diego River divides the city into north and south • Lots of hills and valleys

  5. San Diego History • First people were the Kumeyaay People • Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was first European to visit; claimed land for Spain; called it San Miguel • Mission San Diego established in 1769 • Became part of Mexico in 1821

  6. San Diego History • Became part of USA in 1848 • United States Navy first started using port in 1901 • 1931: officially became a city • WWII: city became a major site for military • Population doubled from 1930 to 1950

  7. San Diego Key Industries • Headquarters of the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet • Lots of defense companies in the area • Tourism is very important • Trade is also important: border crossing with Mexico is busiest in the world

  8. San Diego Attractions Sea World • Original Sea World • Opened in the 1960s (before Sea World Orlando) • Killer whales, dolphins, penguins, sharks, polar bears, otters and more • Watch killer whale show or swim with dolphins • Thrilling roller coaster, Manta, opens this summer

  9. San Diego Attractions San Diego Zoo • Famous for pandas • Also: leopards, elephants, gorillas, hippos, camels, koalas, meerkats and even reindeer (Santa not included) • Go on safari to watch giraffe, rhinos, antelope and more
