  2. Northern Ireland Northern Ireland was created in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned between Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland by an act of the British parliament. Unlike Southern Ireland, which would become the Irish Free State in 1922, the majority of the population of Northern Ireland wanted to remain within the United Kingdom. Most of these were the Protestant descendants of colonists from Great Britain. However, a significant minority wanted a united Ireland independent of British rule, and most of these were Catholics Catholic = republican Protestant = Loyalist

  3. Troubles. In the late 1960s, conflict between the two communities, and involving state forces, erupted into three decades of violence known as The Troubles, which claimed over 3,500 lives.

  6. Good Friday Agreement The Good Friday Agreement or Belfast Agreement was a major political development in the Northern Ireland peace process of the 1990s. Northern Ireland's present devolved system of government is based on the Agreement. The Agreement also created a number of institutions between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Agreement is made up of two inter-related documents, both agreed in Belfast on Good Friday, 10 April 1998: 1.a multi-party agreement by most of Northern Ireland's political parties; 2.an international agreement between the British and Irish governments (the British-Irish Agreement).   8. The Orange Order The Orange Order is a Protestant organisation formed to commemorate William the Orange’s victory over the Catholic Irish at the Battle of the Boyne. They commemorate this victory by marching. However, their Marches take them through Catholic areas of Belfast. This angered the Catholics, and led to riots. To control this, the N.Irish government banned the Orange Order from marching through Catholic areas. This angered the Protestants and this led to riots. This is just one example of sectarianism in Northern Ireland, there are others on both sides. Both sides have had hatred taught to them from an early age, and neither side is willing to give ground.
