1. Tuesday, January 7th • LT: I can create a story idea that follows the general stages of the Hero’s Journey. • ET: Write for four minutes about this question without stopping: • In general, what effect does going through the stages of the Hero’s Journey have on the hero? Give evidence.

Hero’s Journey Project • Expectations: • Show me that you know: • How a character grows and changes from the Hero’s Journey • How the stages of the Hero’s Journey work together • How character archetypes work in a story (we will talk about this idea this week) • You can choose a medium from the list below, or discuss another option you would like to do with either Mr. Cavender or I. • Short Story • Movie* • Play • Song Lyrics • Graphic Novel • Poem • Every idea must be approved by Ms. Hoerst

Hero’s Journey Review & Brainstorm • Using Firefox go to: www.readwritethink.org/files/ resources/interactives/herosjourney • Fill out the graphic organizer to gather ideas for your own story. • This website uses slightly different words, but you should still recognize the stages: • Supernatural Helper = Assistance • Crossing the Threshold = Departure • You can skip “Reconciliation with Father Figure” if you choose—we did not talk about this stage When you are done, save the file to your student drive: • Click “Preview” • Click Print • Set the printer to “CutePDF writer” • Save your file

4. Economic Statistics Vocabulary LT: I can define vocabulary words related to economic development and represent my knowledge on a poster. ET: Read the following statistic and answer the following questions: About 90% of the world’s population lives in the Northern Hemisphere. What does this statistic tell us? What does this statistic not tell us? What other information do we need to better understand this statistic?

5. Labels • Geographers label the world in many ways. • Two of the main labels geographers use are: • More Developed Countries (MDCs) • Less Developed Countries (LDCs)

6. How to Decide What Label? • To help decide whether a country is more developed or less developed, geographers look at statistics to help them categorize the world. • There are 3 types of indicators (statistics) geographers use: • Economic indicators • Health indicators • Social indicators

7. Economic Indicators • Today, we will begin discussing economic indicators. • We will look into what they are and how geographers can use them to label the world. • The main economic indicators (statistics) geographers consider are GDP & market sectors.

8. Today’s mission: • Write definitions in your notebook. • Sort the pictures at your table into categories to go with each vocabulary word. • With your group, make a poster that includes all five words and illustrations to explain the words.

Definitions • GDP (gross domestic product) = the total amount of money a country makes in a year • Per Capita = per person • Agriculture = creating raw materials (plants, cotton, rubber, wood) • Industry = processing the materials to make goods (shirts, shoes, cars…) • Services = selling and distribution of goods (clothing stores, restaurants, hospitals)
