  2. Themes of Philippians Major Theme: Joy in the Lord. “Joy” found five times. “Rejoice” found eleven. Despite being in custody awaiting trial, Paul found reason to rejoice in this good church. Outline of Major Themes. Chapter 1: Paul’s Present Circumstances. Chapter 2: Have the Mind, Attitude of Christ. Chapter 3: Have the Knowledge of Christ. Chapter 4: Have the Peace of Christ.

  3. Philippians 4:10-23 4:10-13 Paul rejoiced greatly that the Philippians had done well in helping him. Paul was glad that the Philippians revived their concern for him (4:10). They had sent to his need before (4:16). They had wanted to help again but lacked opportunity. Paul was glad that they were sending to him – but not because he wanted the help. In fact, he had “learned the secret” of being full or hungry. The Lord helped him learn and gave him strength. One commentator noted that it’s not by long periods of contentment or adversity that we learn but by the transition from one to the other. Whether that is so or not - Paul certainly did have many events of adversity in his life (II Cor 11:23-27). As a counter example to Paul’s contentment - think about Israel of old (I Cor 10:10, Num 21:5-6). Paul had learned contentment and teaches the Philippians and us (2:14-15). Anxiety (4:6) - are we not of value to God? (Matt 6:25-26,30-34)

  4. Philippians 4:10-23 4:14-20 You have supplied my need, may God supply yours “Nevertheless” (although he expressed his contentment), he praised their action (you have well done) (4:14). Philippi had helped when no other church had (4:15). The first day collection for the saints (I Cor 16:1-2) can be used to help the needs of those preaching the gospel. Philippi – beginnings (Acts 16:12ff) Leaving Macedonia (Acts 17:13-15)

  5. Philippians 4:10-23 4:14-20 You have supplied my need, may God supply yours Paul wanted to see the Philippians do well and be blessed before God (17). Example. We want to see our children do what is right (whether it be in helping others or making amends for doing wrong) not just because it’s the right thing to do, and not just because of the good that it does for someone else, but because of the good it does for them before God. We want our children to be like the master (Acts 10:38). Passages to consider: Matt 6:19-21 “lay up for yourself treasures in heaven... for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” The Philippians had their heart in heaven. I Tim 6:17-19 “be rich in good works... storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future” Matt 10:40-42 Matt 25:31-40 “To the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.”

  6. Philippians 4:10-23 4:21-23 Salutations Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. Observations: Not just those in the congregation with which we worship but “every saint in Christ Jesus.” (e.g. note salutations from Rome to Philippi 4:21-22) Every brother or sister in Christ locally and the world over is a part of God’s family.
