This project aims to enhance the 802.11 standard to add interworking capability between cellular and IP networks, including the internet. The objective is to generate recommended practices and specify interfaces for seamless interworking, with a focus on security, hotspot user experience, accounting/charging, and policy. The study group will assess requirements from 3GPP, 3GPP2, GSMA, and WiFi Alliance to incorporate in the recommended practice.

Interworking Scope The scope of the project is to enhance the 802.11 standard and amendments, through the generation of a Recommended Practice (or Standard) to add interworking capability to both cellular and external IP based networks (including the Internet) Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
Objectives • To generate documents to enhance the IEEE 802.11 standard • To provide recommended practice for BSS to external network interoperability. • These outputs will define and specify the addition of specific interfaces to deal with interworking (e.g. security) • Looks at how other TGs fit into an overall interworking solution • Creates a better hotspot user experience. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
Way forward • IEEE 802.11 requires some extra work in the DS to define external interworking • TGe, TGf, TGi and TGk have started to do this already with functional definitions • Accounting/Charging ? • Policy ? • Should assess WFA, GSMA, 3GPP & 3GPP2 requirements placed on IEEE 802.11 Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
3GPP • Can proposed 3GPP interworking model be achieved from current IEEE 802.11 standards ? Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
WiFi Alliance Public Access • WiFi Alliance Public Access III : • QoS (TGe provides QoS over the air) • Handoff (Provided by 802 Handoff group) • Policy (Network layer issue, but does it impact IEEE 802.11) • Mobility (same again) • Roaming (same again, some provided by TGi) • enhanced association service Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
Roadmap • Draft skeleton becomes a Recommended Practice (RP) • Incorporate the WLAN interworking requirements from 3GPP, 3GPP2, GSMA, WiFi Alliance and others • Work towards technical solutions for the differences between the interworking models Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
Straw Poll • That a motion be raised at the Albuquerque meeting stating that an IEEE 802.11 Study Group be formed, to develop an amendment/recommended practice to extend and modify IEEE 802.11 to interwork with external IP networks, including Cellular networks. Stephen McCann, Siemens Roke Manor
