Unit 2 - OPTICS Chapter 4 The many properties of light can be understood using a wave model of light . Section 4.1 The Nature of Light Slide Show #1 (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Light is a form of energy that can be detected by the human eye What is Light? (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Speed of Light • Light travels at a speed of 3 x 108 m/s. • =300 000 000 m/s = 300 000 km/s • This is Extremely Fast • By Comparison Sound Travels at a speed of 330 m/s or 1200 km/h. The difference between the speed of light and that of sound is evident during a thunder and lightning storm. (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Speed of Light (Cont.) • In the case of thunder and lightning, the light from a distant lightning strike reaches us (almost) instantly, but the sound from the lightning strike (the thunder) takes longer to reach us. The greater the time delay between seeing the lightening flash and hearing the thunder, the greater the distance between you and the lightning strike. • As a rule of thumb, every 3 seconds of time delay equals approximately 1 km of distance (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Early Measurements of Light Speed • Albert Michelson was the first person to accurately measure the speed of light. Michelson used a light source and a mirror 35 km away to measure light speed with respect to the speed of his spinning octagonal mirror (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Early Ideas Regarding Light • Pythagoras’ believed that light consisted of beams made up of tiny particles (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Early Technologies Involving light • Using Curved lenses scientists discovered that they could manipulate light to magnify objects. • In the late 1500s, Zaccharias and Hans Janssen, made tubes that would slide inside each other and they put lenses on the ends of the tubes. By experimenting with different lenses and moving the tubes in and out, they discovered that they could make small objects look very large. • They had invented the first compound microscope!! (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Early Technologies Involving light Anton Van Leeuwenhoek improved on the microscope design by changing the curvature of his lenses and consequently was able to discover many small microorganisms which were previously not known to have existed. (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Early Technologies Involving light • Galileo used the information on lenses to build telescopes used to magnify objects in space. (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
Assignment – Section 4.1 • Section 4.1 is mainly a history lesson on the early beliefs of light. Create a foldable or a poster that displays this history. • Be sure to include: • The beliefs of Pythagoras, Galileo, and Michelson • At least 3 early technologies and their inventors • Research one other historical aspect of light (c) McGraw Hill Ryerson 2007
