4. What is Air Cadets? • Organisation for youth between the ages of 12 and 18. • Aims: • Develop leadership and citizenship • Develop interest in the air element of the Canadian Forces • Develop physical fitness

6. What is Air Cadets? • Adult staff organise activities, run the administration of the squadron, and supervise the cadets. • Older / more experienced cadets are responsible for a group of younger cadets. • Cadets are given more responsibility as they gain experience, learn and rise through the ranks

7. Who can join? To join Air Cadets, you must: • Have already had your 12th birthday, and not yet had your 19th birthday. • Be a legal resident of Canada. • Have the permission of your parent(s) or guardian(s)

8. What do we do? Air Cadets offers opportunities to do all kinds of activities: • Flying and Gliding • Survival and Fieldcraft • Marksmanship • Sports • Music • Community Service

10. What do we do?Parade Nights • 742 Squadron meets every Thursday evening during the school year. • Thursday evening training focuses on training. Most evenings, cadets will have classes on a variety of interesting topics • There are also sports nights, parades and competitions

11. What do we do?RegularWeekend Activities • We also have regular weekend activities • Aviation Ground School, for cadets who want to be pilots • Drill Team, for cadets who want to develop discipline, leadership and physical fitness • Band practice, for cadets who enjoy playing music

What do we do?SpecialWeekend Activities • 742 Squadron has special activities throughout the year • Flying days, where cadets get a ride in a small plane or a glider • Field Training Exercises, where they practice their field-craft skills • Trips, where we visit museums, military facilities, or other squadrons in other cities. • Sports competitions, where we compete for glory against the other Ottawa squadrons!

13. What do we do?Summer Camps • Air Cadets have an extensive Summer Camp program • Camps are out-of-town, and range from two to seven weeks in duration. • Each camp focuses on a particular interest, such as leadership, band, technical aviation, flying or survival. • Cadets compete for camp spaces; about 30% go each year.

14. What do we do?Employment Opportunities • Older cadets can apply to work at the summer camps as paid staff. • These summer jobs can be from seven to 10 weeks long, and pay from $60 to $90 a day. • The work develops leadership skills and looks great on a resume!

15. How are we organised? • Partnership • Air Cadet League of Canada • Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces • Local Squadron and Local Sponsor

How are we organised? • Responsibilities: • Air Cadet League organises the sponsors • Canadian Forces provides personnel, some facilities, materiel support • Local sponsors are responsible for local facilities, fundraising • Local Squadrons are responsible for training and supervising the cadets.

17. What does it cost? • Thursday training: fundraising by cadets • Weekend training: fundraising by cadets • Special trips: fundraising by cadets, occasionally some additional costs • Summer camps: funded by the League and CF

18. What does it cost? • No dues or registration fees • Uniforms are provided on loan free of charge • Cadets are expected to participate in fundraising activities • Tag Days • Walkathon

21. Who is the Sponsor? • Our civilian Sponsor is the 742 Sponsoring Committee. It is a group of parents elected to represent the Air Cadet League of Canada at the local level. They find means to support activities not funded by DND. • Chair: Ms. Veronique Morisset

22. How can parents get involved? • The 742 Squadron parent’s committee is involved in various supporting tasks to help the Squadron run smoothly: • Canteen • Fundraising • Transporting cadets • Obtaining needed items • And more!

24. Other InformationWeekly Parades • Parade nights are every Thursday during the school year. Cadets are expected at 1820 and can be picked up at 2130. • Parade nights end with a closing Parade. Parents are invited to come to watch the parade and listen to the weekly announcements. • Closing Parade starts at 2100 and generally is finished at 2130.

25. Other InformationAnnual Review • The end of the year is marked with the Annual Review, a major ceremonial parade where we recognize the Cadets who have best performed over the past year. • Usually the Annual Review is held on a weekend early in June.

26. Other InformationCommunications • Routine messages are distributed through a telephone chain. Your cadet will be assigned a contact in their Flight and should receive a telephone call during the weekend of each week.

29. Other InformationAttendance • Attendance is the most important consideration when Cadets are being selected for summer camps, promotions, awards and other opportunities. • Just like at school, Cadets are expected to be present for regular Parade nights, and for activities they sign up for.

Other InformationAttendance • Cadets who are going to be absent for an activity, including regular training nights, are expected to call in to request leave for that activity. • If a cadet cannot be present for an activity, they must call the Squadron at 613-737-3380, or e-mail at 742aviation@cadets.gc.ca

Other InformationEvaluations and Selections • All cadets have the opportunity to succeed and to be recognised for their efforts. • In order to ensure that Cadets are rewarded fairly for their involvement with the Squadron, we have an evaluation system called the “Points System”. • Criteria for evaluations is published in advance to the selection, and cadets may request a review if they are not selected

Other InformationEvaluations and Selections • The criteria for evaluation vary somewhat depending on the opportunity being awarded, but include: • Experience, in years of service, training level, and rank • Attendance, at regular training and optional activities • Participation in fundraising • Presentation, dress and deportment

33. What’s Next? • Fill out the Enrolment package and leave with the Administration officer, along with a copy of proof-of-age and proof-of-insurance. • New cadets can come back next Thursday for their first evening of training!

34. What’s Next?Dress • New recruits will be issued a uniform within six weeks of joining. • Until they get their uniform, recruits should wear • A collared dress shirt • Dress pants • Dress shoes • Female recruits can wear equivalent clothes but skirts and dresses are not recommended
