Social Responsibility (Poverty Relief Projects) • During 2004/5 financial year through the DEAT social responsibility programme with a total expenditure of R164 800 125, R49,440mil was spent on wages in achieving 1 083 185 temporary job days equivalent to 9 419 job opportunities. • 23% of the job days was taken up by the youth (249 550 job days = 2 170 job opportunities

Social Responsibility cont… • 1,7% of the total job days was taken up by people with disabilities (17 940 job-days = 156 job opportunities) • Therefore as a proportion of the expenditure on jobs, R11,372 mil directly went to the youth, whilst R840 481 thousands was given as a direct benefit to persons with disabilities.

  4. Targets & Examples • DEAT’s social responsibility programme has the following targets: • At least 20% of targeted beneficiaries to be youth • 50% women • 2% people with disabilities The following slides are examples of projects that reflect current achievements

Dinokeng/Soshanguve Wetland RehabilitationProject Description:Rehabilitation of communal wetlands in the Tweefontein area, in partnership with Department of Agriculture; and rehabilitation of wetlands associated with the Tswaing meteor crater and nature reserve. Project Budget: R 747 945.00 Total Person Days: 3 782 Total Job Opportunities: 125 Women person job days: 8 050 - Women Job Opportunities: 70 Youth person job days: 1 840 - Youth Job Opportunities: 16 People with Disabilities Person job days: 230 - Job Opportunities: 2 Province: Gauteng

Save the Sands Wetland RehabilitationProject Description:Wetland rehabilitation in the densely populated and water stressed Sand river catchment, through deactivating headcuts, stabilising erosion, blocking drains, lifting the water table and creating awareness of wetland importance to local communities Project Budget: R 1 143 807.00 Total Person Days: 4 715 Total Job Opportunities: 41 Women person job days: 2 760 equivalent to Women Job Opportunities: 24 Youth person job days: 1 150 equivalent to Youth Job Opportunities: 10 People with Disabilities Person job days: 1 840 equiv to Job Opportunities:16 Province: Mpumalanga

Vhembe / Dongola NP:PeP:Development ProjectProject Description:Build a rest camp; rehabilitate the archaeological sites; build two view points; build a tent camp; construct and upgrade roads; build an entrance gate with reception and amenities; upgrade fences; develop a self guided trail; build bird and game hides; build a wilderness camp; build picnic sites; build new personnel accommodation; and provide services infrastructure to all new facilities within the Vhembe/Dongola National Park. Project Budget: R 45 300 000.00 Total Person Days: 33 714 Total Job Opportunities: 293 Women person job days: 11 901 equivalent to Women Job Opportunities: 103 Youth person job days: 6 051 equivalent to Youth Job Opportunities: 53 Province: Limpopo

River Rangers - Clarens Project Description: Train 10 members from the local previously disadvantaged people who live near the Small Caledon River to manage and guide tourists flyfishers both national and international. Project Budget: R 360 000.00 Total Person Days: 1 654 Total Job Opportunities: 14 Women person job days: 487 equivalent to Women Job Opportunities: 4 Youth person job days: 1 254 equivalent to Youth Job Opportunities: 11 People with Disabilities Person job days: 76 equivalent to Job Opportunities: 1 Province: Free State

KIDS INPARKS • Project description ( PPP ) • Aims at exposing previously disadvantaged children to the National Parks • Participants 7500 learners, 300 teachers for 2005/2006 • The project includes persons with disabilities • Budget ; R10 million over three years • Deat contribution R850 000 00
