How are cells connected within a tissue? • TIGHT JUNCTION: Proteins join between plasma membranes; impermeable barrier; zipper-like fashion. • ADHESION JUNCTION: Cytoskeletal fibers join between cells; flexible; tissues subject to mechanical stress. • GAP JUNCTION: Membranes with small channels between; allows for small molecules to diffuse from cell to cell.
Moving from tissue to organs and organ systems… REMEMBER… • An ORGAN is two or more tissue types working towards a particular function. • An ORGAN SYSTEM is a combination of organs that work together to carry out a particular function.
Body Cavities: Dorsal Cavity Two parts: • CRANIAL: Contains the brain. • VENTRAL: Contains spinal cord
Body Cavities: Ventral Cavity Three parts: • THORACIC CAVITY: Contains the heart, lungs and esophagus. • ABDOMINAL CAVITY: Contains the stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, gallbladder and intestines. • PELVIC CAVITY: Contains the reproductive organs.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Integumentary • Protects body. • Receives sensory input. • Helps control temperature.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Cardiovascular • Transports blood, nutrients, gases and wastes. • Defends against disease. • Helps control temperature, fluid and pH balance.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Lymphatic and Immune • Helps control fluid balance. • Absorbs fats. • Defends against infectious disease.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Digestive • Ingests food. • Digests food. • Absorbs nutrients. • Eliminates waste.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Respiratory • Maintain breathing. • Exchanges gases at lungs and tissues. • Helps control pH balance.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Urinary • Excretes metabolic wastes. • Helps control fluid balance. • Helps control pH balance.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Skeletal • Supports the body. • Protects body parts. • Helps move the body. • Stores minerals. • Produces blood cells.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Muscular • Maintains posture. • Moves body and internal organs. • Produces heat.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Nervous • Receives sensory input. • Integrates and stores input. • Initiates motor output. • Helps coordinate organ systems.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Endocrine • Produces hormones. • Helps coordinate organ systems. • Responds to stress. • Helps regulate fluid and pH balance. • Helps regulate metabolism.
Organ Systems of The Human Body:Reproductive • Produces gametes. • Transports gametes. • Produces sex hormones. • Nurtures and gives birth to offspring in females.
Body Membranes • Line cavities and internal spaces of organs and tubes that open to the outside. • Secrete mucous and fluids. Four types: • Mucous membranes • Synovial membranes • Serous membranes • Meninges
Body Membranes • MUCOUS MEMBRANES: Lining of the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems. • Secrete mucous. • SYNOVIAL MEMBRANES: Lines the cavities of freely movable joints
Body Membranes • SEROUS MEMBRANES: Line lungs, heart, abdominal cavity and its internal organs; named for their location. • Pleura: Thoracic cavity and lungs. • Peritoneum: Lines abdominal cavity and organs. • Pericardium: Covers heart. • MENINGES: Protective cover for the brain and spinal cord.
