About the Project • A skilled workforce is critical to our economic future. • National focus on workforce planning as a key to realising Australia’s growth potential. • The Tasmanian Government ‘s Skills Strategy includes a program of facilitating industry sectors to establish industry workforce development plans. • Successful workforce planning requires good baseline data on the workforce, its skills profile and emerging skills needs.
About the Project • Skills Tasmania has hired Stenning and Associates (together with David Morgan from The Work Lab and Paul Blacklow). • In order to develop a resource that will provide such baseline data on the current skills profile for the state and by industry and occupation. • The project will indentify which skills are in most demand now and those required in the future.
Workforce Skill Needs • Workforce demand for skills is influenced by • Economic growth • Productivity • Replacement and the age profile. • Skills deepening • Skills broadening
Workforce Skill Supply • Workforce skills supply stems from two sources • Domestic qualifications completions • Net overseas and interstate migration • Competition for skills between states and between industry sectors within Tasmania can be intense

Some Key Characteristics • Share of the economy and its growth • Share of employment and its growth • Migration (movement of workers to that industry) • Productivity (Value Added per Employee). • Skill Level • Skill-Occupation Fit • Age Profile
