How Do Animals Use Echolocation? By: Cassie Dixon
What is Echolocation? • Echolocation is: the location of objects by reflected sound, in particular that used by animals such as dolphins and bats • Echolocation is also called biosonar.
Why do they use Echolocation? • Animals use echolocation to find their prey and any obstacles like other animals. • Porpoises use echolocation to navigate, and they also use echolocation to locate certain objects. • When bats use echolocation they simultaneously produce high frequency, high amplitude sounds, and perceive them echoing off various objects.
How do animals use Echolocation? • They emit high frequency sounds or “Clicks,” these sounds bounce off nearby objects and return (echo) back to the sender. This gives the sender a “sonic image” of their surroundings. • The pitch and tone of the sound are determined by the frequency of the air pressure fluctuations which is determined by the way you move your vocal cords.
