Orientation Mammals • Many of the animals that we encounter everyday are mammals. Our house pets, such as dogs and cats, are mammals as well as people! There are certain characteristics that all mammals have including us!
What makes a mammal a mammal? • All mammals are vertebrates. • All mammals are warm-blooded.
What is a vertebrate??? • A vertebrate is an animal with a segmented spinal column and a well developed brain. • Vertebrates have backbones!
What does “warm-blooded” mean??? • Animals that are warm-blooded maintain a nearly constant body temperature. • For example, humans are warm-blooded and keep a constant temperature around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
What else makes a mammal a mammal? • Their bodies are covered with hair or fur. • They breathe air through lungs. • The mothers feed their young milk. • Most are born from a live-birth.
Mammals in our World: • Dogs • Whales • Giraffes • Squirrels • Humans!
