  1. International Wind-Diesel Conference 2011Girdwood, Alaska Susitna Energy Systems Southwest Windpower Perryville, Alaska Wind Farm Kirk Garoutte, Susitna Energy Jay Yeager, SWWP Simple Solutions to Large Problems

  2. Est. 1996, Alaskan Owned and Operated • Energy Solutions Statewide – Wind, Solar Solar Hydronics, Micro-Hydro • ~ 300 Systems Installed State-wide • Perryville, Alaska - Project Lead

  3. The Turbine

  4. Perryville Construction Costs • $150K Wind Farm - Start to Finish • Financed by Native Village of Perryville • Owner operated and maintained (pride of ownership) • ROI ~25,000kW-hr/yr @ $0.60 kW-hr ~ 10yrs • ROI ~6,000 gal.-fuel/yr @ $4.50 gal. ~ 6yrs (and becoming less every day)

  5. Perryville Performance • Commissioned Nov. ‘08 • 10 Southwest Windpower Skystream 3.7 Turbines on 70’ Guy Supported Towers • 25 kW Wind Farm & 120kW John Deere Diesel Generator (~20% penetration) • Class 2 Wind Regime – Avg. 4.60 m/s • >65 MwHrs Prod. Since Commissioned

  6. Key Benefits • Size and scalability of multiple small wind turbines can provide a better fit to the application • Offers multiple redundancies compared to single large turbine installations • Very short project cycle time and uncomplicated logistics • Self erecting towers do not need heavy lifting equipment.

  7. Key Benefits • All assembly and maintenance performed at ground level • Economic development and new local employment • Minimum balance of systems requirements • Able to blend with existing systems • Competitive installed cost

  8. Perryville Lessons Learned • Keep It Simple and Sustainable • Expand remote monitoring capabilities and improve communications system on future projects • Better front end modeling and closer project management will reduce cost and cycle time on future projects

  9. Perryville Lessons Learned Multiple, small turbines can be maintained by local people who are trained by dealer and manufacturer

  10. Perryville Lessons Learned Community participation in and ownership of the project are key to success
