Reading is a receptive skill can be described as the process of extracting meaning from printed or written material.
Significant of reading • It broadens the knowledge of vocabulary and language functions and expressions. • It forms an additional tool of communication to listening and speaking. • It provides students with wide range of t improves pronunciation -cultural knowledge.
Types of reading 1- Intensive 2-Extensive Intensive reading includes: - Skimming - Scanning - Silent Reading - Reading aloud - SQ3R - Supplementary Reading
Reading stages • Activating Comprehension: Pre-Reading Strategies • Constructing Comprehension: During-Reading Strategies • Extending Comprehension: Post-Reading Strategies
In English for Palestine there are reading texts more interesting than others
Some texts might be more difficult than others for these reasons: - Difficulty and strangeness of the topic. - Difficulty of vocabulary. - Difficulty of structure ( sentences and paragraphs). - The length ( the longer text might be the more difficult).
There are reading texts too long to teach well in 45 minutes: Because it include a lot of unfamiliar information ,new vocabulary ,and new structure and expressions
Some reading exercises are difficult for students and some suite their levels
This exercise might be difficult for the majority of students. That is , it requires students to explain the meaning of some expressions in English. This problem will be more complicated if students are not familiar with the expressions required to explained.
Some exercises develop student comprehension and thinking skills and some not
Grade 9 unit 4 lesson 1-2 • Read and mark the sentences true (✔) or false (✘). Correct the ones that are false. • Mike has been away on holiday during the last week. • He thinks he is well enough for football training now. • Sami agrees with him. • The team is doing well enough to win the final. • The teacher is not surprised that Mike has collapsed. • The teacher asks Sami to get the first aid kit and call the doctor.
