  1. University of California A Global CosmologyEducation Academy Professor George F. Smoot Director Center for Cosmological Physics LBNL and Physics Department University of California

  2. Vehicle for Delivery of Vision:Teacher’s Academy Mechanism • Using the Global Hands-On Universe model • Berkeley Teachers’ Academy will establish • an outreach and training center using web-based technologies • will link to 100 partners sites around the world • Replicated in the USA at the Deep Underground Science & Engineering Lab

  3. Mission and Vision • A Global Cosmology Education Academy • teachers and students of all ages around the world will engage in programs and activities to discover their place in the universe through science and engineering education. • Scientists, educators and teachers will develop, support, evaluate, and disseminate innovative strategies for science and engineering education with cosmology as the unifying theme. • Teacher Academy not limited by geographical location, language or cultural constraints.

  4. Organizers • Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCC) led by George Smoot • http://bccp.lbl.gov/ • Berkeley Lab Academy for Science Teaching and Learning • http://bccp.lbl.gov/Academy/academy2.html

  5. Proposed Partnerships • Hands-On Universe and Global Hands-On Universe • http://www.handsonuniverse.org/ • http://www.jahou.org/ghou2007/index-e.html • International Particle Physics Education Outreach • http://particleadventure.org/ • Kavli Institutes Cosmology, Astrophysics and Particle Physics • http://www.kavlifoundation.org/institutes/index.html

  6. Strategies • Teacher education for student and public understanding of the origin, structure, and evolution of the universe and supporting evidence. • Hands-On Universe and other partners include cosmology education • International conferences in the next 2 years

  7. Current Workshop: PHYSICS IN AND THROUGH COSMOLOGYBerkeley, CA, July 9-20, 2006 The goals of the workshop are to: • Present the current scientific view of the history and structure of the universe • Learn and understand the evidence for a minimum straightforward cosmological model of the universe. • Link these first two goals to standards based high school physics skills and knowledge through model experiential teaching and learning. • http://bccp.lbl.gov/Academy/workshop.html

  8. May 2008 International ConferenceCosmology in Science and Engineering EducationEindhoven, Nederland Goals • Identify ways in which science, engineering and technology curriculum and instruction is enriched and enhanced by the skills and knowledge students will gain in and through learning about the structure and evolution of the universe. • Identify the foundational concepts and principles of science and technology that a 15 year old student must know to be able to understand and communicate the minimum straight forward standard model of cosmology (the big bang model) and the evidence for this model. • Identify and share knowledge of existing and planned cosmology educational standards, lessons, instructional materials and projects for students 9 to 15 years of age. • http://bccp.lbl.gov/conference.html

  9. February 2009 Conference Abu DhabiInnovation in Science and Engineering Educationa joint conference in Education Without Borders Goals • Demonstrate and develop ways in which science, engineering and technology curricula and instruction are enriched and enhanced by the skills and knowledge students will gain in and through learning about the structure and evolution of the universe. • Identify the foundational concepts and principles of science and technology that a 15 year old student must know to be able to understand and communicate the standard model of cosmology (the big bang model) and the evidence for this model. • Engage Civic, Business, Academic leaders in activity • Identify and share knowledge of existing and planned cosmology educational standards, lessons, instructional materials and projects for students 9 to 15 years of age.

  10. Model Interactions • HOU Holds Teacher Workshop in Kenya

  11. Future Outcomes • A twenty-first century model for global cosmology education. • A network of teacher leaders, educators, and scientists around the world teaching science, mathematics, and engineering through cosmology. • Evaluations and reports on effective and innovative teaching, learning, and outreach through cosmology education.
