Immigration and immigrantfamilies “we wanted arms, butactuallyfamilieshavearrived ” • The transitionfrom the immigrationofsinglesto the immigrationoffamiliesas a crucialpassage: immigrationbecomesettled • immigrantfamilies: a resourceforintegration, or the nestofparallellives?
A paradoxicalrelationship • Today, over 50% ofimmigrants in Italy are women • Theyarrive more and more alone, asbreadwinner • Theyfindjobs in Italianfamilies, now more and more with the elderly: a nicheof the labour market notvery hit by the economiccrisis • Manyofthemhavefamiliycharges: theyhavetoentrusttheirchildrentoothercaregivers (mainly, maternalgrandmothers) • So theyform the so-called “transnationalfamilies” • The reaffirmationhereof the family as the crucial site for care isbased on the destabilizationoffamiliesthere (see: M.Ambrosini, Immigrazione irregolare e welfare invisibile: il lavoro di cura attraverso i confini, Il Mulino, 2013).
Transnationalfamilies • Migrantfamiliesas “imaginedcommunities” or social unitsstrugglingtosavetheiremotional and social bonds? • Frontiering and relativising • The crucialroleofcaring (also at a distance) • The multiple kindsof care: phonecalls, gifts, visits, skype and chat…. • The sufferingoftransnationalmothering
Three typesoftransnationalfamilies • Circulatingfamilies • Intergenerationalfamilies • Familiescentered on children
Fromtransnationalfamiliesto family reunion • In a democratic State, itispossibletoobstruct and delay family reunions, butnottopreventthem (roleof the Courts in the ‘60) • So transnationalfamiliestendtotransformintoreunitedfamilies • Now, reunionswith “reversedroles”: the husbandas the reunitedsmember, and the followingproblems • The “threefamiliesofmigrants” • The reunionisnot a happy end, but a newbeginning
Families in emigration • Conventionalvisions: between “bearersof social problems” and “truetraditionalfamilies” • Dynamicinteractionbetween diverse practices and waysof life • The practicalemancipationofworkingwives, against the marginal life ofreunitedwivesstaying at home ashousewives
