Selections: On Family • A young man’s duty is to behave well to his parents at home and to his elders abroad. Treat people respectfully, especially your family. Be respectful to authority figures.
Selections: On Family • When his father and mother are alive, a good son does not wander far away; or if he does so, goes only where he said he was going. When you are old enough, don’t move too far from your parents, family is extremely important. Also, don’t lie to your parents.
Selections: On Religion • Wealth and rank are what every man desires, but if you can only have them by disregarding your beliefs, you must give them up. • Poverty and obscurity are what every man hates, but if they can only be avoided by disregarding your beliefs, you must accept them.
Selections: On Religion • What does it mean? • Your beliefs in right and wrong are more important than anything else.
Selections: On Ethics • The good man does not grieve that other people do not recognize his merits. His only anxiety is that he might fail to recognize the merits of others. A good man acknowledges others but does not worry if his deeds are noticed.
Selections: On Ethics • First and Foremost, be faithful to your superiors. Be honest, especially with authority figures.
Selections: On Ethics • Silence is a friend who will never betray. If you don’t want a secret shared, then don’t tell anyone.
Selections: On Ethics • In education there are no class distinctions. Your grades in school depend on how hard you work, and demonstrate your knowledge. It does not matter how much money your family has.
Assignment • Pick 3 sayings from the “Analects of Confucius” worksheet. • On the back, explain the modern meaning for each saying. • Give me an example of your experience with each of your 3 lessons. One paragraph each. (5-7 sentences) Due Monday
