Mission Statement Green Tech America is commercializing an engineered yeast for producing low cost renewable fuel, ethanol, from cellulosic biomass.
Why ethanol from cellulosic biomass? Cellulosic biomass (including wood, grasses, agricultural residues, etc.) is the world’s most abundant renewable resources in the world.
Composition of all types of cellulosic biomass Cellulose 45% Hemicellulose25% Other 5% Lignin 25%
Cellulose and hemicellulose polymers from cellulosic biomass can be converted to a mixture of sugars containing nearly 50-60%glucose and 30-40%xylose.These sugars should be fermented to ethanol by microorganisms, most ideally by the baker’s yeast.
Why use engineered yeast? The original yeast can only ferment glucose, but not xylose
The solution Dr. Ho’s breakthrough engineered yeast developed at Purdue University is able to effectively co-ferment bothglucose and xylose to ethanol. The yeast is widely known as the Ho-Purdue Yeast.
The MostEffectiveMicroorganism The breakthrough strategy plus several other innovative approaches used for engineering the yeast have made the Ho-Purdue Yeast greatly efficient for large-scale industrial cellulosic ethanol production. It has been validated by several companies to be the current most effective microorganism for cellulosic ethanol production.
The New Co-products Producing Yeasts In addition, to market the original Ho-Purdue Yeast and facilitate cellulosic ethanol producers to produce cellulosic ethanol, GTA will also develop the G2, G3 and G4 Ho-Purdue Yeast (based on the prototype already developed). These new generation yeasts will be capable of producing high-value co-products together with ethanol production and making the production of cellulosic ethanol more profitable.
The Ho-Purdue Yeast produces 30-60% more ethanol from cellulosic biomass Fermentation with Ordinary Yeast 48-60 Gallons of Ethanol Pretreatment And Hydrolysis processes Feedstock 1 dry ton Cellulosic Biomass 80-100 Gallons of Ethanol Fermentation with Ho-Purdue Engineered Yeast

The Ho-Purdue Original Yeast, G1, and its G2, G3, & G4 derivatives can all be used to produce corn ethanol and make corn ethanol production more profitable. This is because the Ho-Purdue yeast can ferment high concentrations of glucose very effectively. 16
Development of new improved yeast and Selected results from new improved yeast
The improved yeast strain can ferment hydrolysates containing high conc. of sugars w/o nutrients and w/o controlling pH g/L g/L g/L Fermented by improved 424A(LNH-ST) Fermented by 424A(LNH-ST)
Under identical conditions, the original and the further improved 424A(LNH-ST) strains, fermenting high concentrations of glucose and xylose in the presence of inhibitors Under identical conditions, the original and further improved 424A(LNH-ST) strains, fermenting high concentrations of glucose and xylose to ethanol in the presence of inhibitors
Other important goals and innovations Making farmers, particularly corn farmers, and corn ethanol producers more profitable Converting CO2 produced during ethanol production to useful products
