  1. Skeletal System: pp.850-855 • Pre-Movie: http://kidshealth.org/kid/closet/movies/how_the_body_works_interim.html • Major structures: • Bones (206 in humans) • Joints • Where two bones meet; pads of cartilage cushion the ends of the bones of a joint and the bones of a joint are held together by bands of connective tissue called ligaments

  2. Skeletal System Functions • Protects and supports the body and organs • Interacts with skeletal muscles • Produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets

  3. How can the skeletal system produce blood and platelets? • Some cavities in spongy bone are filled with a soft tissue called bone marrow. Red bone marrow begins the production of all blood cells and platelets

  4. Bones: take care of them • Try to keep a diet that is mineral-rich and includes dairy products, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, together with exercise to help you maintain bone density. • Why? • Because young adults have a bone density that usually remains constant, but around the age of 35 bone replacement gradually becomes less efficient and some bone tissue is lost • What’s osteoporosis? • Severe bone loss can lead to osteoporosis, which means “porous bone.” In other words, your bones become brittle and easily fractured.
