Background • In line with Ghana’s Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation (LI 1652), road projects must be registered with the EPA. • Environment in the LI is defined to include “the natural environment, economic and social issues” • Within the road sector in Ghana, EIA, SIA and RAP’s are prepared for major road projects
SIA Components Based on the SIA studies, the following were indicated to be implemented • HIV/AIDS Education • Road Safety Campaign/Education • Complimentary Infrastructure
Methodology(Complimentary Infrastructure) • Gender-based participatory approach • Bottom –up decision making • Beneficiary involvement in project selection and siting
Complementary Infrastructure The following Projects were identified, selected and designed for; • KVIP and WC Toilets • Fence Walls • 95 Market stalls with KVIP toilets, urinals and boreholes • 20 Boreholes drilled
LESSONS LEARNT • Funds were separate from the total road rehabilitation funds; • Beneficiaries identified and selected their own projects; • Communities provided land and sometimes labour as contributions; • Impacts are directly felt by beneficiaries
