Tanzania • National HIV prevalence in the population aged (15-49 yrs) 5.7% • HIV prevalence is higher among women (6.6%) compared to men (4.6%). • Prevalence is higher in urban(8.7%) than in rural (4.7%). • The majority (56%) of PLHIV are women • MTCT is responsible for 90% of new infections in infants and young children. • 21% - 30% of PLHIV are registered at CTC, 63% - 83% of those eligible for RX are receiving ARVs. (Tanzania national guideline 2012) • HIV-1 is very diverse in Tanzania. • Drug resistance mutations is the subjects to be studied.
PMTCT STRATEGIES STILL CHALLENGES PMTC (option A) sites from 3029 (yr2008) - 4301 (yr2010). Pregnant women at ANC 0.9m(yr2008)-1.7m(yr2010). Change of sdNVP to AZT+NVP or AZT+3TC+NVP Among 22,033 tested infants 2159 infected (2010). Way forward • Screening of HIVDR among HIV-infected children before starting ART. • Increase coverage of surveillance of DRAMs among HIV-1 infected naive and experienced. • To study the Impact of HIV-1 subtypes diversity in relation to mutations development • Roll out Option B+ PMTCT by 2014
