Project Overview The 2nd graders are helping the United Way campaign by raising awareness in our school community and in Columbus. This week, students will focus on citizenship and community leaders. Students will be learning about being leaders by encouraging others to participate in the campaign.
Reading Skills: 2.1.6- Read aloud fluently and with expression 2.2.1- Use a table of contents 2.2.5- Identify main idea of reading Firefighters at Work Noise Level 1 • Listen to Leaders read task list. • Gather all materials. • Open to page 70 in your Treasures book. Discuss the Talk About It. • Taking turns with your group members, read aloud Firefighters at Work with your group. The last page is 79. • When you have finished the story, work together complete the comprehension activities with your group. • Turn the papers into the Turn In File with your name on the top. Standards 2.W.1 Write an opinion piece in which they introduce a topic, state an opinion, supply reasons to support opinion and provide a concluding statement. Writing “Making a Difference” Noise Level 1 • Monday: Decide if you would like to write a letter to the editor, public service announcement or make flyers to inform and persuade people in the community to participate in the United Way campaign. Begin the rough draft of your writing. • Tuesday and Wednesday: Continue working on your rough draft of your writing • Thursday: Edit your rough draft. Trade with a partner to help edit your writing. Self-Selected Reading / Accelerated Reader Standards RF2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension Noise Level 0 • Choose a library book or a book of choice that you have not read. • Be sure you picked a book that you can read alone. • Silently read. • After you finish your book, write the name of the book and information on the SSR/AR form to turn in for a grade. • When you finish the sheet, turn it in to the Turn in File. • Materials Needed • SSR/ AR form • Book of choice Home
Working with Words Standards RF2.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. RF2.3.a Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words Noise Level 1 Monday: Start the spelling packet. Tuesday: Finish the spelling packet and turn in to the turn in file. Wednesday- Choose an activity using your words: 1. Crayon Mats 2. Flip Book 3. Story Thursday: Spelling City- go to the website to practice your words for the test on Friday. You may only go to the challenge list if you have mastered the regular list.
