Why Information Management? Information management (IM) draws on technology, information, and management to increase efficiency and promote innovation in a wide range of organizations. IM is central to industry trends such as cloud computing, big data, business intelligence, and data analytics. MIM Curriculum • The goal of the MIM program is to develop your ability to recognize and realize opportunities to use information and technology to improve organizations. • The MIM curriculum achieves this goal by providing you with: • Broad knowledge of the technologies, design approaches, and management techniques for addressing information management problems (Core Courses, 15 credits) • Internship and project-based learning experiences in which you integrate theory and practice to solve real-world information management problems (Internship and Capstone project, 6 credits) • In depth study of one or more aspects of information management (Specializations, 15 credits)

MIM Internships and Project Courses • OBJECTIVE: Practice applying and extending theories, technologies, and techniques to solve real world information management problems • MIM Internship Experience • INFM 736 Information Management Experience • MIM Students work on internships at a range of for-profit, non-profit and research organizations • MIM Capstone Experience • INFM 737 Solving Problems in Information Management • Recently students have worked on projects for World Bank, Encyclopedia of Life, and General Dynamics • Projects are planned with PriceWaterhouseCoopers and several entrepreneurial startups in the DC-Baltimore Area
MIM Thesis (Optional) Objective: Practice conducting research that advances the state-of-the-art/state-of-the-practice in information technology and management. • Identify a faculty advisor • Take INST 701 Introduction to Research Methods • Develop a proposal, thesis committee, and complete a research project (INFM 799 x 2) • Replaces • MIM Internship (INFM 736) • MIM Capstone Experience (INFM 737)
MIM Specializations • OBJECTIVE: The MIM Specializations develop your depth of knowledge about a particular aspect of Information Management • User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) • Focuses on designing and implementing user interfaces. • UI/UX designer, usability analyst, and front-end website developer • Data Analytics (DA) • Focuses on manipulation and mobilization of data for high-impact applications and decisions. • Data scientist, data analyst, or information analyst • Organizational and Process Analysis (OPA) • Focused on diagnosing and solving problems with critical organizational activities • Business analyst, systems analyst, and process consultant. • Project Management (PM) • Focuses on planning, leading, and executing projects • Project manager, program manager, and consulting lead
MIM Specializations (cont.) • Curation and Management of Digital Assets (CMDA) • Focuses on creating, managing, and preserving digital assets in a variety of sectors of the economy. • Digital asset manager, digital content specialist, or director of digital curation services • Information Management Research (IMR) • Focuses on conducting research that advances the state-of-the-art/state-of-the-practice in information technology and management. • Advanced study in information science doctoral programs and careers in cutting-edge corporate or entrepreneurial environments
MIM Specializations (cont.) • Strategic Management of Information (SMI) • Focuses on the managerial, administrative, and organizational aspects of information management • Technology Development and Deployment (TDD) • Focuses you the development, implementation, and maintenance of technical systems in support of information management. • Individualized Program Plan (IPP) • Combine technical and managerial coursework to create a program of study customized to your interests and needs.
MIM Program Emphases • In addition the formal MIM curriculum, you can customize your MIM courses, activities, and experiences to focus on particular domains, careers, and topic areas. • MIM Program Emphases that students have pursued include, but are not limited to: • Search and information retrieval technologies • Cloud computing • E-Discovery and Legal Information Management • Health informatics • Entrepreneurship
MIM Program Offerings • The MIM program is available in a variety of formats, locations, and schedules. • You can complete the MIM as a Full Time UMD student in: • 21 months (3 courses/semester + internship) • 18 months (3-4 courses/semester + internship) • You can enroll as a Part Time student and complete the MIM in: • 24 months (2 courses/semester + internship “in place”) • Extended enrollment (1-2 courses/semester + internship “in place”)
MIM Program “Locations” • MIM courses are offered at two campuses and online. This provides you with access to the same course content and high-quality instructors in venues and locations that best meet your needs. • College Park • Shady Grove • Online • Each of these offerings involves the same courses, the same requirements, and the same faculty – but in different forms and venues.
MIM @ College Park • On UMDs College Park campus, the iSchool is located in the Hornbake Building, which also houses the UMD Career Center and the iSchool research centers. • iSchool classrooms, research labs, and faculty offices are near the center of campus, close to parking, mass transit, and the Stamp Student Union. College Park campus proximity to Washington DC allows MIM students enrolled there to benefit from the numerous professional development groups, events, and activities taking place there on a regular basis.
MIM @ Shady Grove • The Shady Grove campus is located in the Interstate 270 corridor in Rockville, Maryland. It is easily accessible from I-270, the Intercounty Connector, and the Capital Beltway, making it convenient for students who live and work in Northern Virginia, Frederick, and throughout the Washington DC, metropolitan area. • The Universities at Shady Grove offer state-of-the-art facilities, shuttles to and from College Park, and free parking. Its location in the I-270 corridor gives students access to internship, employment, and professional development opportunities in one of Maryland’s fastest-growing areas.
MIM ONLINE – Select Courses • Select MIM courses are offered online for students enrolled at either College Park or Shady Grove. • Individual Courses offered online include: • Project Management • Strategic Management of Information • Web-Enabled Databases • Knowledge Management • Offering these courses online allows you to better fit the MIM program into your preferred schedule.
MIM ONLINE – Full Program • The MIM Online program is a cohort-based, structured offering of the MIM degree designed to provide you with access to the MIM experience wherever you live. • If you enroll in the MIM Online you will: • Join a group of colleagues from around the world • Take two classes each semester (fall/spring/summer), completing the MIM program in two years with a specialization in Data Analytics. • Complete a series of activities designed to facilitate your successful completion of the MIM program and encourage your development as a high-impact information professional.

Doug Oard: Leading researcherin cross-language information retrieval and eDiscovery. Former director of the MIM program. Jimmy Lin: “Big data” researcher, with a particular focus on large-scale distributed algorithms for text processing. Co-Author of “Data-Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce.” Offers a course in cloud computing in Spring 2013. iSchool Associate Dean for Research. MIM Faculty
Jordan Boyd-Graber: Focuses on discovering hidden structure in natural language to create new applications. Offers a new course in big data analysis in Spring 2013. MIM Faculty Jessica Vitak: Studies the social impacts of communication technology, specifically on the relationship between network composition, self-presentation strategies, and social capital.
Brian Butler: Research areas include the dynamics of online communities and other technology-supported groups, Wikipedia policies and rules, social networking systems, and the politics of technology implementation in organizations.Current director of the MIM program. Kanti Srikantaiah: Edited several books on knowledge management. Former director of Center for Knowledge Management, Dominican University, Illinois. MIM Faculty
Ping Wang: His research seeks to understand the popularity of IT innovations and the effects of popular innovations on organizations. Director of the iSchool Ph.D program. MIM Faculty Vedat Diker: Studies how best to capture organizational and business processes to achieve good data design. Offers a course in relational and NoSQL database design in Spring 2013.

Graduate Assistantships and Financial Aid • Graduate assistantships are available for MIM students enrolled at both the College Park and Shady Grove campuses. • Part time (hourly) employment is also available both on campus and off campus • Scholarships and other financial aid is available through the College of Information Studies, the University of Maryland and other organizations.
