Developing the Workforce How union learning reps can shape members’ development
New Issues – New Responses • Apprenticeships - in clinical areas? • New transferable roles at Band 4 • All degree nursing profession • Transforming Community Services • Continuing Professional and Personal Development • NHS Constitution & Skills Pledge • KSF Review
The impact on the nursing workforce • Demographics- ageing workforce & less young people • All degree nursing- impact on diversity and ‘growing your own’ • Generic band 4 roles - built around care pathways • Devolution of nursing tasks to Associate Practitioners • Remote supervision of community staff • Integration with social care and multi agency working
Some Implications for ULRs • Engage – in designing employer policy • Champion- progression pathways for HCAs • Lead the debate – get qualified staff on side • Keep up to date – inform branch & members • Promote CPPD – for HCAs using KSF • Develop learning agreements- to address these new issues
What to do - back at the workplace • Identify potential gaps in the nursing workforce • Discover employer/SHA policy on new roles, apprenticeships, and CPPD • Signpost HCAs to new learning opportunities • Review learning agreements • Find ways of keeping up to date ( e.g. Skills for Health, RCN, Unionlearn, BIS, National Apprenticeship Service) • Identify sources of funding- JiF, employer, NAS • Access more training for yourself • Organise awareness raising for KSF reviewers and qualified staff
