  2. PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Introduction~ Purpose and User Benefits • Design Overview • Bag Circuit~ Modular Analysis~ Testing and Verification • Disc Circuit~ Modular Analysis~ Testing and Verification • Results • Future Work • Ethical Considerations

  3. PURPOSE • Helps users locate lost discs • Provides flight data of thrown disc

  4. USER BENEFITS • Portable • Light-weight • Solar powered • Removable data storage for quick access

  5. DESIGN OVERVIEW BAG CIRCUIT DISC CIRCUIT

  6. DESIGN OVERVIEW

  7. BAG CIRCUIT

  8. Bag circuit modules

  11. BAG POWER MODULE

  12. BAG communications and data MODULE

  13. TESTING AND VERIFICATIONPOWER MODULE • Solar panel output • Step-down circuit delivers 5V to rechargeable battery • Battery successfully charges while simultaneously powering data-collection and communications modules

  14. Testing and verificationcommunications module • Accurate data successfully received from disc • Successful data transmission from 350ft • Successful data transmission in uneven terrain with obstacles

  15. Testing and verificationdata-collection module • Data successfully written to micro-SD card • Out of 1000 data packets sent 992 were written to the micro-SD card: 99.2% success rate

  17. Disc circuit modules

  18. Disc circuit (close-UP)

  19. DISC CIRCUIT (Dimensions) Height = 1.8cm Weight = 0.45lbs

  20. PCB Design

  21. Disc power module

  22. Voltage conversion module

  23. Communications and motion detection modules

  24. Signaling module

  25. Disc State machine

  26. Testing and verificationPower module • Batteries provide at least 3.6V • Batteries are isolated from the rest of the disc circuit while charging • Step-down converter reduces battery voltage to 3.3±10%

  27. Testing and verificationmotion detection module • Accurately forwards 3-axis acceleration to microcontroller • Accurately forwards 3-axis orientation to microcontroller

  28. Testing and verificationcommunications module • Accurately transmit data over 350ft • Data transmission begins when disc is thrown • Data transmission terminates once the disc lands • Data is transmitted continuously while disc is in flight

  29. Testing and verificationSignaling module • Buzzer can be distinctly heard from a 4 meter radius • LED is clearly visible from a distance of 10 meters

  30. RESULTS (Accelerometer)

  31. Results (Gyroscope)

  32. Results (Trajectory) Matlab Central – inertial measurement unit position calculator

  33. Future work and possible improvements • Improve signaling module • Improve data display • More robust casing for disc circuit • Smaller and lighter components

  34. Safety and ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS • SAFETY~ Ensure that PCB and battery are securely fastened to the disc~ Solar panel leads must be insulated and separated securely • ETHICS~ To seek, accept and offer honest criticism of our work ~ To cite all reference material
