Domestic Life • Plagued with hardships • Alcoholism • Many fights • Fitzgerald got a bad reputation as a writer (hard to take a drunk seriously) • Zelda and Fitzgerald had lavish lifestyle, but didn’t make enough to maintain it.
Zelda • Began having mental breakdowns @ age 30 • Institutionalized – in and out for 18 years • In 1948 hospital burned down with Zelda in it.
Fitzgerald • Worked hard to make sure Zelda was comfortable • Went into huge debt from her doctor bills • Eventually started dating a movie columnist who encouraged him • He worked on novels and as a screen writer • They stayed together until his death
1920’s • American Dream = rags to riches • Prohibition – selling illegal alcohol • How Gatsby made his money • Many people didn’t follow this – made a lot of money • Newly rich people edged out old money • Threatening for established wealthy • Widespread fear that immigrants would take over jobs • Stock market crash in 1929 – many peoples’ lives devastated
Characters • Jay Gatsby – protagonist, represents the search for the American Dream; his goal was to recapture the past • Nick Carraway – narrator, becomes disillusioned about the wealthy; he has what others lack – personal integrity • Daisy Buchanan – socially elite woman, object of desire, based on Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda
Characters • Tom Buchanan – proud of his affairs (many), Myrtle is just one for now • Pammy – represents children of the Jazz Age (very little contact with parents) • Jordan Baker – shallow golfer that dates Nick • Myrtle Wilson – represents the lower class
