So you are going to be a 6th grader next year….Question and Answers you might need to know (a quick survival guide to OMS)
Lockers • Every student gets a new locker each year….you DO NOT keep one for 3 years • Your homeroom teacher will assign your locker and will give you the combination the first day of school
Lockers • You may either get a top or bottom locker, they are assigned randomly • All combinations are changed during the summer, so the person that had your locker last year doesn’t know your new combination • No, 6th graders don’t get stuffed in lockers during class change
Cafeteria • You will use your same lunch number • You can pay ahead just like you do now • We have three serving lines. Two offers the menu, and the other is a “mega” line • Yes, all students have assigned tables during lunch
Cafeteria • Yes, you can get assigned seats • Yes, you can get lunch detention • Yes, the entire grade level may be assigned silent lunch • No, you can’t sit where you want
CafeteriaThings to remember… • Get everything the first time you go through the line, you may not go back through once you have paid • You may not buy snacks and extras if you owe money to the cafeteria • Most rules are the same as here
Buses • The middle school and high school share buses. That means that you will ride the bus with “high schoolers” • Look for the “other” yellow bus that goes through your neighborhood. More than likely, that is your bus next year
Buses • Next year, seats will be assigned by grade level. 6th grade in front to 12th grade in the back • There is NO REASON for a 6th grader to ever be in the back of the bus unless it is an evacuation drill
Buses • Riding the bus is a privilege and service provided by the State. It is not your right. • If you earn a bus suspension, you are off of all buses. This includes field trips.
Buses • All of our bus routes are listed on the middle school web page. You can get a good idea of the bus you will ride next year
Counseling Department • Ms. Anderson has an “open door” policy • You do not need an appointment, only permission from your teacher to go to counseling • Anytime you have a problem, talk with your teacher, Ms. Anderson or Mr. Fisher
Dress Code • No spaghetti straps. All straps must be at least 3 fingers width • Shorts must be finger-tip length. This means with your arm relaxed at your side, your finger-tips should not be above the hem of your shorts
Dress Code • No “sagging”. • No shirts with inappropriate or suggestive sayings • Yes, you can wear flip-flops • No, you can’t wear pajamas

Academic Teams • We have 2 academic teams at Owen Middle for 6th grade. The Broncos and the Iron Horses. • Each team consists of a teacher for math, language arts, science and social studies
Academic Teams • Each academic class lasts 70 minutes • You will have a 5 minutes to change classes. If you are always tardy (or late) to class, you may lose your class change privilege.
Electives • As a 6th grader, you have a limited choice of electives. You may choose band and PE or the “Wheel” and PE • Everyone in the school takes PE everyday
Electives • Wheel classes consist of art, spanish, keyboarding, chorus and careers. Each 9 weeks (or grading period), students rotate between these classes in order to get an idea of what is offered for their 7th grade year.
Electives • In band, you will learn to read music, play an instrument, give concerts for your parents, family and peers, and have the opportunity to play at football games, pep rallys and other school events.
