Employment Opportunities 1960 America A Raisin in the Sun Walter is a chauffeur Ruth is a housekeeper These are not very good jobs Only ones they could get Were not being paid well • People refused to hire black Americans • Unskilled labor and service jobs • Only allowed positions in their own communities • Most African Americans lived below the poverty line

Segregated Housing 1960 America A Raisin in the Sun Their family didn’t have a very good place to live No one wanted them in the new neighborhood Everyone thinks that segregation is just how it suppose to be • Early 1900 scattered into white neighborhoods. • Projects such as urban renewal policies began making them segregated • Whites began to flee to the suburbs

  4. My Ethnic Background • Italian • Irish • English • German • My family doesn’t have any cultural traditions • Doesn’t change my view on identity because its not a big deal for me • I don’t define myself by my ethnic background • I’m not judged by it like in the book

Personal Dreams and Goals • Going to a good college • I want to learn as much as I can so I can be successful in life • Getting a good job • So I can provide for myself and a family later on • Being happy • Not having to worry about everything and being satisfied with the chooses I have made in my life. • Like the novel, my dreams are going to provide me with a decent life

  6. Conclusion • Shouldn’t be judged by their ethnic background • Shouldn’t keep them from achieving their dreams • Should be judged by who they are as a person • Everyone has different dreams and goals and shouldn’t let anything stop them from achieving them
