Phrase vs. Clause • A phrase is a group of words. • A clause is a phrase that has a subject and verb.
Simple Sentence—one independent clause • What are the subject and verb in each sentence? • 1. My best friend in the world is coming over to visit this afternoon. • 2. At the stroke of midnight, the carriage turned into a huge pumpkin. • 3. The young, cute kittens looked at me from the pile of clothes. • 4. I don’t remember the actor’s name with the big, blue eyes.
Compound Sentences—two independent clauses • Identify the two independent clauses. What joins the clauses together? • 1. The dog won many prizes, but he doesn’t know many tricks. • 2.Gillian did not like to read; she was not very good at it. • 3. I didn’t do my homework, so my parents grounded me. • 4. I went to the circus; I painted my face and rode a pony.
Complex Sentence—one independent clause with at least one dependent clause. • What is the independent clause? Dependent clause? Subordinate Conjunction? • 1. After I came home, I made dinner. • 2. We visited the museum before it closed. • 3. The bridge fell down because it was not properly maintained by the government. • 4. Although he ate a really big dinner, he now wants dessert. • 5. Whenever they eat at this restaurant, they order a hamburger and fries.
Compound Complex Sentence—two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause • Identify the independent clauses. What is the dependent clause? • 1. 1. Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with. • 2. We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought that we were wrong. • 3. If Barack Obama is the nominee for the Democratic Party, he'll run against John McCain, but it won't be an easy contest to win.
More Compound-Complex Examples… • 4. Even though he prefers to eat with a fork, he chooses to use chopsticks in Chinese restaurants; however, they aren't easy to use. • 5. I usually use a pick whenever I play the guitar, or I just use my fingers. • 6. John went to school, but James remained at home because he had a sore throat. • 7. If he changes his mind, we shall know for sure that Joe has learned his lesson, but only time will tell. • 8. Those clouds promise rain; we should hurry before we get caught in a flash flood. • 9. Here is the money that I owe you, and I am happy to be free of debt. • 10. Were you ever in a storm that was full of lightning, or don't you recall?
Decide Simple, Compound, Complex, or Compound-Complex. • 1. Pauline and Bruno have a big argument every summer over where they should spend their summer vacation. • 2. Pauline loves to go to the beach and spend her days sunbathing. • 3. Bruno, on the other hand, likes the view that he gets from the log cabin up in the mountains, and he enjoys hiking in the forest. • 4. Bruno dislikes sitting on the beach; he always gets a nasty sunburn.
Continued… • 5. Bruno tends to get bored sitting on the beach, watching the waves, getting sand in his swimsuit, and reading detective novels for a week. • 6. This year, after a lengthy, noisy debate, they decided to take separate vacations. • 7. Bruno went to the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and Pauline went to Cape Cod. • 8. Although they are 250 miles apart, they keep in constant contact on the internet.
