  1. The Haiti Network CaseFinal April 2005 Due Date: May 7, 2005

Need • You have been hired by a nonprofit organization in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a developing country, to design a technology solution. • They have 5 PCs on 3 floors of an old building without electricity, but which has electrical outlets. A generator supplies the energy. • They would like to network the units to share a printer and the centralized data files.

  3. Questions? • You might need to ask many questions to drag information out of the user so as to complete the project successfully.

  4. The Environment • The building is in disrepair • There is no electricity, no running water • There is a generator • There are 5 PCs (1 printer) on 3 floors • Distance between units about 30 feet • Dust level HIGH • Ability to pay for equipment – donations

  5. Your job • Develop list of required items; NIC(s), cables(?) switch(?) • PCs run Windows 98 • Upgrade? • What if they later want Internet access?

  6. Report Format • Introduction – the need, outline the environment, a summary of the recommendation, the estimated cost of materials and labor. • List of Materials – detail the equipment/parts needed for the project. • Diagram – a layout of the proposed solution. Please try to use something like Visio (available in the student lab) • Detailed explanation of diagram • Price List
