What is LEED? • The U.S. Green Building Council has developed LEED as a third-party certification program and a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.
What does LEED do? • LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: • Sustainable site development • Water savings • Energy efficiency • Materials selection • Indoor environmental quality
What does LEED not do! • LEED does not certify, endorse or promote products, services or companies, nor does it track, list or report data related to products. • LEED does not award credits based on the use of particular products.
What aspects of LEED apply to Lochinvar? • The aspect of LEED for New Construction that applies to Lochinvar is, first and foremost, “Energy Efficiency” • The credit for “Optimizing Energy Performance” is very important since it accounts for as many as 19 LEED points. • Solar panels can also be utilized for the “On-Site Renewable Energy” credit
LEED Credits • Minimum Energy Performance • Required: no points awarded • Optimize Energy Performance • 1-19 possible points • On-Site Renewable Energy • 1-7 possible points • Innovation in Design • 1-5 possible points
LEED Credits • Minimum Energy Performance • There are no points awarded for meeting the minimum requirements. • ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guides require an overall 30% energy savings for the building. • Small Office and Retail Buildings • Small Warehouses and Self Storage • K – 12 Schools • Healthcare • Highway Lodging
LEED Credits • Minimum Energy Performance requirements listed in the Design Guides will vary slightly but are typically as follows: • Gas Boilers - 85% Combustion Efficiency • Gas Water Heaters – 90% Thermal Efficiency
LEED Credits • Optimize Energy Performance • Points are available based on the total energy savings for the building above and beyond the baseline requirements. • Example • Install an Armor water heater system in conjunction with a Solar panel array that has a 30% solar fraction • Armor will improve efficiency from 6-7% above the minimum • Solar panels will supplement 30% of the energy costs • Overall a 36-37% energy savings with domestic water • Install a condensing SYNC boiler bank • Sync will improve efficiency as much as 10-15% above the Design Guide baselines
LEED Credits • On-site Renewable Energy • Points are available based on the percentage of total energy offset by the renewable energy source. • Example • Install a Solar panel array to supplement the building’s domestic and hydronic systems
LEED Credits • Innovation in Design • Points are available when projects achieve exemplary performance above the LEED baseline requirements. • Example • Install a Solar panel array to supplement the building’s domestic and hydronic systems • Install Armor condensing water heaters • Install Knight condensing boilers
LEED Credits • Water Efficient Landscaping • Two points are available for limiting the use of potable water for landscape irrigation. • Example • Use the treated condensate from a bank of condensing boilers for irrigation • Fully condensing boilers can deliver as much as one gallon of condensate per 100,000 Btu/Hr of operation.
LEED Credits that are not applicable • Common Requests • Recycled Content • Regional Materials • LEED specifically says: • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components and equipment must not be included in this calculation.
LEED Credits that are not applicable • Claims made by competitors • Site Development – Maximize Open Space • Green Power • Low-Emitting Materials • Paints and Coatings • Adhesives and Sealants
LEED Credits that are not applicable • Maximize Open Space??? • The intent of this credit is to promote biodiversity by providing a high ratio of open space to the total site development footprint. • The goal is to provide vegetated open space that exceeds zoning requirements by 25%. • A boiler with a small footprint is desirable but it does not provide “vegetated open space”
LEED Credits that are not applicable • Low-Emitting Materials? • This would seem to be legitimate, if LEED did not specifically say: • Materials used on the interior of the building that are applied on-site… • Green Power? • Points are awarded for using grid-source renewable energy!! • All I can say is, “Come-on, you can’t be serious!”
LEED and Lochinvar • Key Point • The minimum requirement for Gas Boilers is 85% Combustion Efficiency • Basically, all Lochinvar Copper-Fin II and Power-Fin (M9) Boilers meet the minimum requirements. • All Lochinvar Condensing boilers with ratings above 85% will assist in garnering additional LEED points for the project.
LEED and Lochinvar • Lochinvar’s line of high efficiency boilers and water heaters along with our Solar thermal panels can provide legitimate LEED points above the minimum requirements, for Engineers, with a focus on Energy savings and Renewable Energy.
