  1. THE LIFE OF COWBOYS Second Grade Level Jenna Marwitz

  2. FOCUS Ask students what they already know about cowboys, and ask them to share some of their thoughts.

  3. CONCEPTS COVERED BY THE END OF THE LESSON THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: • Understand the differences between cowboy apparel and our everyday clothes. • List differences between the lives of cowboys and their own. • Use a Venn Diagram. • Acquire information from a variety of sources.

  4. Written by: Marie and Douglas Gorsline Publisher: Random House New York

  5. Written by: Lucille Recht Penner Illustrated by: Ben Carter Publisher: Grosset & Dunlap

  6. Written by: Bobbie Kalman Publisher: Crabtree Publishing Company

  8. Have the students take notes as you are reading and going through the books. Let them know that they will be using the notes to write a paragraph about cowboys. After reading these texts to the class leave them out for display. Throughout this lesson the students will need to use them as guides in their activities.

  9. TECHNOLOGY Have the students research cattle branding on the internet. The students should research different kinds of brands, and how to read them. HELPFUL LINKS http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ncrhtml/crview08.html http://www.barbwiremuseum.com/cattlebrandhistory.htm http://www.cowboyshowcase.com/brands.htm

  10. WRITING ACTIVITY After reading the texts and discussing them, have the students write a paragraph of their favorite things about cowboys. The students should have written some notes while listening to the stories, and they should be used when doing the writing assignment.

  11. List what is the same and different about their lifestyles and cowboys. VENN DIAGRAM STUDENTS COWBOYS

  12. READING the Map of the Chisholm Trail This map is found in Life on The Trail, let the students take turns in groups reading the map, and following the trails. Have them compare the Chisholm Trail map to a current United States map so that they can see which states the cowboys passed through.

  13. ART~ making bandannas! Jenna For a unique art activity, the students can create their own bandannas! Cut some material (a light neutral color) into 1 ft x 1 ft squares, and allow them to paint or use markers to make it their own!

  14. ART CONTINUED The books talk about branding the cattle. Discuss this with the kids, then let them draw their own personal brand… My Brand

  15. This is a page out of Bandannas, Chaps and Ten-Gallon Hats, and it explains how cowboys (and girls) use bandannas. After each child creates one or his or her own, they will come up with a new way to use a bandanna. Their ideas should be something that will be useful to them as kids growing up in the twenty-first century. As a dramaturgical class activity, have the students demonstrate their idea.

  16. SPECIAL EDUCATION MODIFICATIONS • Instead of an entire paragraph these students could write a list of their favorite cowboy things. • Have these students find one brand that they like off of the internet.

  17. GIFTED AND TALENTEDGifted and Talented Students could choose a character and do a report on one of them. They could also do a role-play or skit of their character (alone or with another GT student).*The characters below were in the Cowboy book by Marie and Douglas Gorsline… but the students could choose any cowboys or other western characters that they like.
