Senior Services • Important Date Sheet: August 31 • Weekly Counselor Table at Lunches (September and October) • Senior Orientation in Classes (Handouts!) • September 16th : In English classes • Week of September 20th: Through electives for those not in English • Senior Conferences: Begin after Senior Orientation • Check the East Gaston website for updates. • Goal: For every senior to have a post-graduation plan.

College Application Process • Primary Months-September and October; November at the latest! • Target number of 3-4 Colleges • Online applications preferred by colleges • CFNC.org or college websites • Limited Availability of paper applications in Counseling Office, College websites • A computer is available in Counseling Office for students to use.

  5. Common Misconceptions about Applying to College • Wait to apply after SAT or ACT scores are back. • It is fine to wait right up until the deadline to apply. • There is no need to apply to a school that we think we won’t be able to afford (such as a private college). • If I am starting off at a community college, I can wait until later on in the spring to apply.

  6. Sending Transcripts • Apply throughCFNC and send electronically • Input of NCWISE student number • Look for box to check to have it sent. • Student can request and pick them up from Mrs. Rumfelt, Guidance Secretary • 24-Hour Notice • It is the student’s responsibility to mail transcripts. • Transcripts cannot be faxed!

  7. Recommendations • Send only if the college requires them! • At least a one-week notice for forms • At least a two-week notice for written letters of recommendation

  8. Testing Requirements • SAT or ACT • 4-year colleges and universities • Some health-care field programs • Placement Test • Community Colleges • Gaston College: COMPASS • SAT Subject Tests • Used for placement at some 4-year colleges • Plan early when to take!

Test Fee Waiver Eligibility Student is… • a member of a family receiving public assistance • a resident in a federally subsidized public housing project • a resident in a foster home • receiving free or reduced lunch • Eligible to receive free or reduced lunch based on family income and family size One of the above must apply; documentation is required.

NCAA Clearinghouse • Student creates an account and registers at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Student must request first transcript and mail to the Clearinghouse. • SAT/ACT scores must be sent directly to the Clearinghouse using code 9999. • A student will not be completely cleared until the final transcript is received.

Scholarships • “Current Scholarships” Newsletter • Distributed in homeroom every 4-6 weeks • A copy for every senior • Posted on school website • Primary source of what’s available and when • College-based scholarships • Most do not require a separate application. • Tighter criteria than most scholarships • Watch for scams and search services! • Deadlines are not negotiable!

Financial Aid • Grants, loans, work study • Must complete the FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after JANUARY 1 • Eligibility based on 2010 income information • Apply for PIN ahead of time • one for the student and one for a parent • www.pin.ed.gov • Some colleges also require the PROFILE form

Help with Applying for Financial Aid • January 27, 2011: Financial Aid Night for Parents • Led by a CFNC representative at East Gaston • Understanding the Financial Aid process • Understanding how to complete the FAFSA • February 19, 2011: FAFSA Day • At a location in Gaston County (TBA) • Actual individual help in completing the FAFSA
