Buddhism Origin: began in India and spread to China and other parts of Asia Founder: Siddhartha Gautama Worship: shrines, homes, wats, temples Text: Sutras, tantras, Tripitaka God: none, belief in a god is not necessary to end suffering Beliefs: Four Noble Truths, break the cycle of reincarnation and reach nirvana by following Eightfold Path

  4. Shintoism Origin: Japan Founder: no known founder Worship: shrines, homes, torii gates Text: Kojiki God: spirits, kami Beliefs: humans are pure by nature and can keep evil away through purification rituals and attain good things by calling on kami

  5. Confucianism Origin: China Founder: Confucius Worship: none Text: Analects God: not a religion, no gods Beliefs: purpose of life is to fulfill one's role in society with propriety, honor, and loyalty
