BOTP and what it is • Sensation that a part (or as a whole) of the human body has been translated outside of its bounds • Related to the Rubber Hand Illusion
Goal • Test the limitations of body ownership • Invoke BOTP on a digital representation of a human hand • Once this is accomplished other experiments of this nature will be conducted
Target Audience • Software Designers – new input techniques, mouse/keyboard • Video Game Devs – interaction could become much more immersible • Artificial Limb – research could be applied to the making of them • Psych Research – further understanding of how brain functions
Related Work • “Fooling Your Feelings” • Preformed tests using a monitor showing subjects hand • Monitor showed hand that was being stroked on a certain finger • Subject’s hand was being stroked on a different finger • Results showed subjects felt a different being stroked
Why We Think We Will Succeed • Experiments based on previous studies • Fresh perspective
Test Subjects • Trying to use 5-7 subjects for each experiment • Now taking applications from classmates (wink, wink)
Experiment Series #1 • Experiment will be based upon the rubber hand illusion • Replace rubber hand with a monitor showing the subject’s hand • Purpose is to explore certain variables needed to further experiments with BOTP
Experiment Series #2 • Experiment is basically an extension of first experiment • Program will be made to give the subject the chance to give us real-time results • When subjects feel the BOTP, they click the mouse which will time delay monitor feed
Experiment Series #3 • Same set up as before with the monitor screen • We will introduce a stress inducer • By measuring heart rate and visual cues
Experiment Series #4 • Experiment with a complete BOTP • Attempt to move a subject’s center of perception outside of their body • Head mounted camera so that the subject is viewing themselves from behind (Finally a way to check out how those jeans look)
Evaluation of Experiments • During the course of the experiments we will be asking questions • Visual cues from the subject will also be a part of our research
