Punishment and Its Goals • Retribution: the belief that a wrong done by an individual should be met with an equivalent form of suffering “eye for an eye” • Deterrence: the attempt to prevent further criminal behaviour through punishment...tries to prevent re-offending • Rehabilitation: view that the offender can be brought back into society through education, therapy or positive supportive environment
Prisons as Social Control • Prisons originally built as efficient way to punish, discipline, and rehabilitate criminals • Is this effective? • Recidivism rate: the rate at which criminals repeat their offences and return to prison
