  2. Review of the Criminal Justice System • The Police: maintains public order by enforcing law • Judicial System: court system that determines guilt through strict rules and procedures • Penal System: those found guilty of criminal offense face a range of consequences

Punishment and Its Goals • Retribution: the belief that a wrong done by an individual should be met with an equivalent form of suffering “eye for an eye” • Deterrence: the attempt to prevent further criminal behaviour through punishment...tries to prevent re-offending • Rehabilitation: view that the offender can be brought back into society through education, therapy or positive supportive environment

  4. Prisons as Social Control • Prisons originally built as efficient way to punish, discipline, and rehabilitate criminals • Is this effective? • Recidivism rate: the rate at which criminals repeat their offences and return to prison
