What is APAN-eCulture? • What is APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network)? • A non-profit international consortium established in June 1997 • Providing an advanced networking environment for the research and education communities in the Asia-Pacific region • Promoting global collaboration ※http://www.apan.net/
The objectives of APAN • (a) to coordinate and promote network technology developments and to advance network-based applications and services; • (b) to coordinate the development of an advanced networking environment for research and education communities in the Asia-Pacific region; and • (c) to encourage and promote global cooperation to achieve the above.
The Context of APAN-eCulture • The development of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) • ⇒ Impossible to discuss anything without mentioning and/or using ICT • ⇒ ICT is not for professionals, but for everyone

The Mission of eCulture • To make the research and education more active in Asia-Pacific region through applying ICT to all disciplines including Humanities and Social Sciences, and to provide the fruitful outcome to the societies at large
The Goals of the APAN-eCulture To pursue various issues on culture taking full advantage of ICT through active partnership Information-Sharing; information on the practical methods, published in academic conferences etc. best practices and/or lessons learned among members Discussions to; aggregate e-resources scattered among member countries Provision of the place; for collaboration in research or project
Objectives (1) • Technological Issues • Sharing information about new technologies to visualize a cultural phenomenon spatially and/or chronologically, e.g. GIS applications • Sharing Experiences; providing case studies which use the above-mentioned technologies • Communication with other members about e-resources (systems) scattered among member countries, and about aggregation methods including interoperability and meta-data, etc.
Objectives (2) • Cultural Issues • Encouraging academics in Humanities and Social Sciences to make proposals for taking full advantage of ICT • Information Sharing about the social changes in member countries along with the development of network infrastructure; e.g. Sub-Culture peculiar on the Net • Discussions on the impact of globalization and localization. • Exploring the possibility of cultural database in Asia-Pacific region
