The Origins of the Terms Pilgrim & Pilgrimage • The English term ‘pilgrim’ originally come from the Latin word peregrinuswhich means a foreigner, a stranger, someone on a journey or a temporary resident. It can describe a traveller making a brief journey to a particular place or someone settling for a short or long period in a foreign land
Pilgrimage in the Bible • Abraham (Genesis 12:9) • Moses (Exodus) • Journey through difficulty towards ‘promised land’ • Called by God • Journey requires faith to endure • God delivers at the end • New Testament • The Day of Judgement at the Second Coming is the goal for Christians (Matthew 25:31-33) • A righteous Life is a pilgrimage (Hebrews 11:1-16)
